Weird is the only word for it.

It sounds like the engine is just about to start...but never does.
I think it is "running" because the engine and the lower part of the
tuned pipe get hot, it makes some smoke, and oil (not fuel) comes out
of the tuned pipe when I turn it upside down. But no changes in mix
(from .5 to 3 turns) or throttle setting (closed to half open) allow
it to start. I have gone through 3 starter batteries with this, and
each time, it seems to get a little better. New glow plug,
disassembling, cleaning, reassembling, fresh fuel...all without
benefit. I am out of ideas...

Should I just get a new one?
