I just came across this video here:
http://born2net.tempdomainname.com/download_files/HughesCrashed.wmv

It shows a guy who has never flown a full-scale heli get in and try to
fly it first time. As you'd expect it ends in tears. What was going on in
his head to make him think he could fly it without any flight time and
risk his life trying? I am honestly gobsmacked at this.

OH MY GOD
I fly my Raptor better than that with only a few flights under my belt.

Unbelievable!!!! This displays a total disregard for the safety of others
and himself. I dont know anyone who would even try this with a model, never
mind a full sizer.

People like that should be put on an island in the middle of the Atlantic
away from everyone else.

Unfortunately, the island would soon become over crowded, because they say
that there's one born every minute. Now that's scary.

You live in a very different world to me then Gordon. If you'd seen the
number of people I've said "Do NOT think you can fly this" go out and do
exactly what the guy in the video did, you'd have to do some re-thinkink.

They number is legion!

I bet the owners of the other aircraft parked nearby were pleased...the one
the cameraman is lurking behind appeared to get hit by something. We all
know how expensive model aircraft are; just think how expensive it is to
repair full size ones!

I feel for the helicopter

the pilot can go to hell :o

A bit off subject but yesterday on the tv program, "you'v been framed", a
small aircraft with floats (don't know what it was) aproached to land on the
water, with the wheels down. Sure enough it hit the water and fliped right
over. proably more of an innocent mistake with bad concequence, than a
looser for a pilot.

Two people got out and sat on the upside down floats presumibaly still
atached to the plane, and were trying to padel it to the shore.

Initially when I saw it, I was in total disbelief -- I really was. I

Yeah, I tell ya, if I never saw that vid for myself I wouldn't have
believed it if someone told me about it. Then again, with the sort of

Just a thought I had there- and a cross ref to one of the other threads {OT}
Real Helicopters- Remember the film 'Biggles'< I think it came out in the
90's- The hero 'Biggles' somehow got transported to the 90's London from the
World War 1 era, well he used a helicopter as a getaway vehicle- bearing in
mind he would never have seen one before to be technically correct- he was
able to fly it in an extraordinary manner- without even an inkling of the
principles of helicopter flight or basic mechanics. To quote him in the
film- 'if you can fly a Sopwith Pup, you can fly anything' Somehow I doubt
it....... More like if you can fly a Hirobo Shuttle you can fly a sopwith
pup.

Now if Biggles had said 'Sopwith Camel' then it might have been a little
more believable - the 'Pup' was a teddybear compared to the 'Camel' from all
I have read - the Camel was apparently completely unstable in flight thus
needing constant 'tweaking' rather than flying itself, that sound familar.
;-) AFAICR they lost a LOT of pilots trying to make the switch from pups
to camels...

[I'm not seriously suggesting anybody could move from flying _any_ plank
straight to succesfully flying a helicopter but some of those WW1 birds were
not easy to fly...]

They walked from Europe in the year dot, and before they knew it, this
little bit snapped off and left 'em stranded. They only came out of
curiosity but found their escape route blocked by a heavily used sea lane:)

You'll need to update your version of Windows media player, perhaps.
Right click on the link and "save link as" something you will remember.
Double-click the link from there, or browse to it in the media player.

What was really interesting about this was that it looked the same as
when I first tried to hover a simulator RC heli -- the tal swinging
around, and the sideways tipping as the throttle comes up.

He should have spent more time in the simulator. :-)

I saw a program either on The Discover Channel or the local PBS station on
Sikorsky's development of the helicopter. He designed it, built it, and
learned to fly it, one step at a time. I've been trying to find it in VHS or
DVD but am not having much luck. I did find a book, "Helicopter: Pioneering
with Igor Sikorsky" on Amazon.com that looks interesting. The link is:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1853107689/qid=1052167427/sr
=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/002-9832797-5640042?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

To say that Mr. Sikorsky was a gifted man is a gross understatement. He taught
himself to fly the very machine he was designing. Not many in the world, ever,
can make that claim. I once heard a quote that allegedly came from Mr.
Sikorsky in reference to test pilots. I don't remember the exact wording but
the gist was that the only people who should be allowed to test fly a new
aircraft design should be the engineer that designed it. That way, the good
ones get better and the bad ones illiminate themselves as a matter of course.

Sounded appropriate to me! ;-)

Did you never see the video where Bells chief test pilot flew the first ever
Bell machine (ship 1)? He declined to use the seat belt in the open cockpit
heli (on training legs exactly like the models use) but after he was bounced
out of the seat, into the rotor blades and thrown out the side, I suspect he
wished he hadn't been so cocky.

Fortunately he got away with a broken wrist.

The Sikorsky guys fared better, then Igor's pilot (other than himself)
designed the now common "Swedish Yoke" which allowed a real element of
control.

Me too. I taped every one of that series. I love it. It showed the very
early developments of the Bell helicopter, built by Arthur Young and
Larry Bell and team... What Arthur did was to build a model first to try
out new ideas, and even a bit of practice on the controls to get an idea
of how it handled before going full scale.

Sikorsky was indeed a very gifted man. Prior to his helicopter
pioneering, he also built fixed-wing aircraft. This was in the days when
there were no flight sims or anyone who had any experience to teach him
what to do. How do you know whether your machine design is at fault or
your lack of skills are at fault in these very early stages of
development?

I know from watching the Choppers series that those involved in early
helicopter design were very brave people indeed. Imagine if something
went wrong when you're sat inside a full-scale heli when you are still
testing it in the developing stage. What if the thing suddenly started to
rise and kept rising with you in it? What if it keeps going to one side
without being able to stop it? Must have been very scary in those days.

the pioneers I know about were). The difference is, is that the people
involved with early helicopters knew the risks, but they had chosen to do
it because they knew the great importance of such a vehicle.

The nutter in that video you saw doesn't have any credible reason to be
doing what he did. These days there are people to teach you how to fly
safely, and flight sims to help out too. In those days people hadn't a
clue how to fly, but that doesn't mean they were nutters because they
went about learning to very carefully, in little steps.

Same as the first time I tried my model. Luckily I had training gear to
stop it crashing... he didn't. :)

Or someone should have told him what those pedals are for. :)

That was a problem with the Rotorway heli's which used a non symmetrical
blade, (including the original Execs). Get the CG of the blade too far
rearwards (quite easy to do) and the first pull on the collective could well
be your last, as the lever was impossible to push back down. The advise was
to tether the heli so it couldn't climb too far, and if the blades "worked
as advertised", then and ONLY then, remove the tethers.

I think the problem lay more in the building of the blades than the design,
but now you can get almost ready to fly blades, so I'd suspect the problem
is no more. It'd be interesting to hear from any recent Exec owners though.

What if it keeps going to one side
> without being able to stop it? Must have been very scary in those days.

For the guys in the "experimental" flying machine hobby, it probably still
is :-)

Woaw !

This guy had a lot of chance ! Maybe it'a a "mentally chalenged" thief
(he saw too much James Bond films:)

I think he has some notions of what pilotage is, because it seems he
uses the tail rotor correctly (I mean, he USES it and in the good
direction). Maybe this guy know how to fly a plane. But he will need a lot
of helis to be a helicopter pilot :)

That's almost exactly what I said in another recent post. :)

Hahaha! Yeah, too true. :)

Guess he never heard of flight sims. This was a while ago, so I wonder if
he DID actually get another heli and was able to 'fly' it for longer
than... 14 seconds like he did in this video? :)

I doubt he did though...

My Window's Media Player couldn't open this 'WMV' file. What version
does it take?

I know it works with version 7.1.

Try saving the file, then opening it; or pasting the URL into your
player's 'Open URL' option and see if that helps!

If not, keep trying it as that can also help sometimes.

Try opening in with the basic 'Windows Media Player'. Right click -> open
with -> choose program -> Windows Media Player (with the old icon). If that
works then there is probably something wrong with you media player. If not
then you may need an update.

Version 9 is the latest, if you want to try it here are a few links, but its
about a 15MB download
