Fellow sailors,

Recently acquired a 3 metre long gaff rigged yacht without ballast or any
electrics. Given the huge sq. cm size of the mainsail set alone this is
going to take a mother of a electric ( or nuclear powered) winch. Problem
is, how do you translate winch efficiency definitions (expressed in
foot/pounds over time or in metric equivalents) into actual pulling power
for a certain sized sail. There must be a way, and as usual it is probably
quite simple!
