Hey guys, i didnt know where to post so i chose here. Does anyone else have this interest that I find very appealing? I though i'd share one of several projects i have done. I really like to take the "toy grade" cars and put hobby grade equipment in them and paint and detail them to look scale. This car has A duratrax seven cell ESC, a Futaba servo, a Duratrax high rpm 380 motor and Futaba radio gear. I put hobby grade tires on it and upgraded the suspension a bit too. Suprisingly, it is very fast...........i'd say at least in the 25-30 range. As a kid i loved to build models, now i build 'em AND they drive.............i love it!! Thanks for lookin'!!

Looks good.

I just wish there was more stuff available to hop up toys.

I'm going to start converting my turtle van to a working RC van/truck. I'll keep you in the loop

that is nice work! i wish i had pics of my big ugly radio shack buggy that i have converted. put a worn out 15 turn in it on 6 cell stick pack and got 23mph. planning on putting an ezrun brushless setup in it. i think i can get 35+mph out of this old thing

do you ever go to thrift stores looking for rc stuff? i seem to have had some pretty good luck going to them. i think the coolest thing i ever scored was a tamiya bullhead for $25.00. my most recent score was a couple vintage rc cars still in the box, and in really good shape for there age. one is a nikko buggy from 1986, and a bandai landcruiser from 84. love the vintage stuff!

Here's my early 80's Nikko Big Thunder buggy.....with all updated electronics and lights. It is in nearly mint condition, got it off e-bay!

that is cool. i have a radio shack toyota landcruiser from 82. it is the only rc vehicle that is made before i was born. also got it at the thrift store and it is nearly mint. i really gotta post sum pics of my rc junk pile! so many projects!

so i managed to get this little aero buggy out for a test run. lets say it was a bit shorter than i thought it was gonna be. absolutly ridiculous power on 3 cell lipo, so much so i could not keep the tires to grip. after about 2 minutes of crazy donuts the motor cooked. serves me right the car was only supposed to run on 6 aa batteries. wouldnt mind coming across a 24 mm motor that could handle 3 cell lipo. if i had the money i would like to get a brushless setup for smaller cars to experiment with.

Dude, thats hilarious............running that little thing on 3s lipo.....sounds like something i would do. Here are some motors that you might consider. you can usually overvolt motors if you dont max 'em out on amperage(gear 'em too tall). The last one i am posting a link to says its an 11,000 rpm motor, which should be at 7.2v..............overvolting this one may work best as it wont have such huge rpms, but high torque and decent speed instead.

i think if i can be patient and wait a bit for brushless systems, it might be a good idea. what i would like to do is go brushless in everything i have simply for the reliability, not so much the super high performance. decided to do a bit of work on my radio shack landcruiser. got a servo in place just need to take the stock electronics out. sad thing is it is supposed to run on 6 volts, and i dont have any battery packs with that low of voltage. im kinda scared to overvolt this one cause the way the motor goes in would be hard to fix

I'm certainly not promoting to overvolt that one, but most motors used in rc are made to handle more than is used in the vehicle. For instance, the standard work hog Mabuchi 540 (used more than any other motor in basic rc vehicles) has a nominal specified voltage of 12v. But they are run on 7.2....................There is a chart on mabuchi-motors.com that will show you all the voltage and torque ratings on every size. The only motors i have fried have been greatly overvolted.........i ran a 9.6v nominal 550 on 16.8, it worked for about 5 minutes, then roasted, smoke and all.

Check out this chart..............its handy for me: http://www.mabuchi-motor.co.jp/cgi-bin/search/e_model.cgi

so i tried posting some pics, but for some reason it wouldnt work. and photobucket wasnt working either. will try again later. was prowling around on ebay last night and found this gem: http://cgi.ebay.com/LOOK-Vintage-Radio-Shack-TURBO-TIGER-4X4_W0QQitemZ160380657579QQcmdZViewItemQQptZRadio_ Control_Vehicles?hash=item25576e9fab i think that would make a nice piece to the collection. http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Tandy-Mini-Land-Cruiser-RC-1-16-Scale-Car-Jeep_W0QQitemZ250533162999QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_To ys_Hobbies_Radio_Controlled_Vehicles?hash=item3a54 f0aff7. another nice one, but i gotta buy escs for my current projects first. im gonna cross my fingers and hope to score one of those streak escs used on ebay.

i just finished putting the landcruiser together and took it for a test run. handles great and seemed to handle 3 cell lipo ok. motor wasnt very warm after about 5 minutes of playing with it. it is certainly not high performance but it looks great!

I have a shell of the 2006 jada camaro, it was a promotional car from DrPepper. I would like to make it a working car. Does anyone know if there are after market parts that would fit this huge 1/6 scale car, without me going to a hobby store and looking like a total douch. It has nothing on the chasis, its basically chasis, and wheels, and the gear box is hollow. Any help on size of electronics, gear box, motor etc. would be appreciated

at my local radioshack (which is called "the source") they have 1/6th scale nascars. i just went to thier website, but they are no longer listed. but i know the outlet i go to had a couple last time i was in. sounds like finding a new chassis for your shell is the case. i have a couple really nice toy store type shells that i cant find suitable chassies for either. at least not on my budget anyways. those nascars were a pretty penny too, something like 250$. if you are interested i could track down a phone # to the store
