Are there any kits available for these types of planes? The cover of MA magazine shows a Zero with coroplast tail feathers. Are all these planes scratch built. I'd like one in epp covered in tape for electric combat.

Virtually no one who is actively flying RCCA/AMA rules compliant combat uses this forum for discussion. The Radio Control Combat Association (RCCA) has its own website and forums and THAT'S where the action is. However, some of us monitor this forum for the purpose of helping out newbie combat fliers. Visit www.rccombat.com and click on the forums. Come join us! Combat fliers RULE, IMAC fliers Drool...

To answer your question though, yes, several "garage shop" kit manufacturers make kits for 2548 combat. They are made by people who ACTUALLY FLY combat. However no 'big time' manufacturers do to my knowledge.

The forums have SPECIFIC information on the electric setups that have been found to work the best. Follow that advice.

There are links on the RCCA website to kit manufacturers. Try these:

Thank you for the links!
I did come across rccombat.cm in my search but I guess I failed to see the mfg links, you are right it is a great resource. I am finding what I am looking for now! I am starting to look over the other classes like ssc and other scale classes. I like the look of the chunky stand off scale warbirds going at it. I wouldn't mind building a kit first as a sport plane to mess around with and then finding a combat class to compete in. It looks really interesting and I think my flying style would suit well.

That Zero comes from Hattrick Enterprises. It is, in fact, the same Zero that is in my avitar. That is my little brother, Eric, in the MA cover. He flew the Zero on the cover to second place at the AMA Nats, but he got beat out by me flying a different Zero ;)

Cool, thanks for posting! You and your brother must have a lot of fun flying together. My brother and I fly together and people say it looks like combat so we thought we should try it out.
I think the article said your brother got in your way of a 3 category sweep. Is that right? Nothing like a little sibling rivalry!

Just so you know, Brian and Eric are two of the best combat fliers in the country. Must be all that video game stuff when they were real little. ;) I've never had the pleasure of meeting the Gilkey's but it you look at the national standings, they are always on top or very near it. If they or their dad, Scott make a suggestion, it is almost always a very good one to listen to.:D
