Hi all,

I'm relatively new to RC planes have been flying combat wings and "warmliners" for a bit and have been eying EDFs for the speed. I have a few questions, I'd like to get something big and scale, I've narrowed down my choices to a few models a FlyFly Mirage 2000, a Windrider F14, a RCLander Rafael, or a windrider F-35.

I want to put retracts in whatever I purchase and I'm figuring I need to go with air retracts, can anyone point me towards a newbie guide for them, I'm curious how I actuate the air pressure and what sources I use for the pneumatics (like is it just the duster gas from wally world or something else).

My other issue is that I drive a little hatchback and while a 4.5ft long plane is no big deal my hatch only opens up to about 35 inches wide (the mirage is 37.5 inch wingspan, has anybody else dealt with this on the mirage, can you twist it in delicately) can you suggest something large with stubby wings (F-35 perhaps)?

Do any of the models I'm looking at not take retracts well, or is there one that is very easy to put them in?

does anyone have any suggestions to a newbie to EDFs as well should I not look to giant scale for my first EDF is there something else you can suggest?

Thank you all for your time.

EDIT: This needs to be moved upto the EDF discussion I posted it in the wrong place. Sorry.

I'd keep it light and simple. Foamies are park flyers and to me, it's defeating the purpose to complicate and weigh them down with retracts. Better to just setup for hand launch, IMO.

Ok I've spent the last little bit looking at the P3 Squall so maybe I'll take your advice and just go for something like that...

Just remember that EDF's are very inefficient and therefore you will have to draw more power than a comparable size/weight propeller driven model to achieve the same performance.

yeah I'm not looking for anything that will fly for 20 mins, I have thermal gliders for that, but something that can give me a good 3-5 mins of roaring fun would be great.

All of the planes you had listed are good models, I was just saying there's no need to complicate them with retracts; just build them as lightweight hand launch models. You can handlaunch even the big 90mm FlyFly models no problem. Here, check out the videos:

Yeah I've seen the videos of them hand launching the flyfly stuff, so far everything I have is hand launch, was trying to get something fast than what I already have and that has that added niftyness of retracts.
