After a while this will turn into a Fairwind build or a Nirvana reconditioning........ I'm looking forward to adding RC sailing to my hobby room, but it will be 10-12 months before the new hobby room is done.....

However; the 7 acre community park and pond are finished. Going to be very nice to have the water just a few hundred yards away! :)

gee, man, 7 acres of water, sweet. Real nice that they built the pond first, very considerate.

Enjoy

I don't snowboard however; often downhill at West Point and crosscountry or snowshoe at Fahnestock.

Before I order new anyone have any Sailboat Electronics? Interested in something like;

S5801 Sail Winch Servo(s) and S3801 Servo Sail Control and/or S3802

or

Hitec HS785HB Sail Winch Servo(s) and/or HS765HB or HS815BB

New to Marine electronics...... so, suggestions are very welcome, especially if you have a setup available. :)

PM me to let me know........ Thanks

Hi Simages,
I use airtronics 94162Z High Torque Metal Gear, works good with my boats, I use a 6V setup.
They are very reasonable.

Simages,

You live in the States where I've noticed your RC stuff is really cheap. At those prices are you looking at buying second hand electronics? If so; why? I've just spent days finding a good price on a HiTec HS-815BB Sail Arm Servo. I saw in the US they sell for about $40 . Over here the price is about double.

Did a quick scan and didn't see what boat you want eletronics for. Anyhow - the best sailwinch is made by RMG. And I say the Hitec servos are great. It's all I use (apart from RMG in big boat). For 1m boats with 'B' rigs I use a Hitec HS-645MG (no good in a stong wind). The HS-765HB Sail Arm is pretty good too (but bigger). The HS-815BB has about 23kg torque at 6V. This is heaps! For a 1m boat I'd go with the HS-765HB.

Have you seen this site? Lists every servo known to man and some......

Larry - thanks for the feedback and link to the servo dbase, I've linked to it before, but really helps to get feedback with experience.... Just starting out with a Nirvana original and a Fairwind 900 build.

As for the electronics "classifieds". I usually put out feelers, but mostly only buy if new and generally do very well in this forum. I'm often lucky and get folks that have other stuff as well. Can't hurt to ask and put it out there.....

During my quest for better servo prices and "in stock items" I came across TomRC.com (http://shop.tomsrc.com/index.php) CA USA. I was pleasently surprised to find "discounted pricing and $2.95 for 2lbs USA shipping.

Hitec HS-785HB Sail Winch Servo - $41.79
Hitec HS-765HB Sail Arm Control Servo - $32.86

Small world,

I just bought the same thing here in Australia. HS-765HB $AU47.50 and HS-785HB $AU47.50 Cheapest I could find in Oz. One Sail Arm servo and one Drum Winch.
Do you have any details on mounting the Hitec drum winch "thru-the-deck"? I'm going to use it on an IOM with a skiff back.

I would have started the build earlier, but planned to go skiing and snowshoe a bit, but we didn't anticipate this kind of weather in the valley? Who knew???
Have some basic starter electronics for the Fairwind build and Nirvana resurrection, HiTec servos overkill??? Well not class authorized.....

In my case most are suggesting to "NOT use" the the servo mounting system included with the kit! Being new to all of this I'm still compiling my build steps.

The HS-815BB Sail Arm Servo is rated at 24.7 kg/cm torque @ 6V. In a 1m boat this is enough power to rip out pulley blocks if the rigging fouls. It's happened to me :o.
I've just fitted one of these servos to an IOM. With 140 degree rotation the sail arm is far too long for a 1m boat. Too much travel. Took some work to reduce length of boom sheeting by shortening arm length and moving boom/sheet attachment points. Next boat I'm fitting a drum winch; which is cheaper for a Hitec. Everyone else uses RMGs in IOMs.

Going to start the Fairwind 900 this weekend and decided to purchase another, simplifying our learning curve as well as the build.

Best I've found so far is a "new" Fairwind 900 kit for $175 shipped.Well, turns out they do not have the Fairwind II in stock, glad I checked.

Be careful. The Fairwind III has been out about a year and is quite a bit different from its predecessor, notably a new GRP hull instead of ABS. It's caused a bit of head-scratching on the Yahoo user group. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Fairwind900/

Change 3, to further simplfy our learning curve, we decided to both get Pro Boat Endeavors as starter sailboats. It wasn't as easy to find a second Fairwind II so, I'll keep the 900 kit for my first build. Besides; my LHS is a Horizon Hobby retailer and would prefer to buy them local..... ;)

What would you do if your wife said; "Oh, I like having a motor, I want that one, but can we paint it Blue?" :)

I'd buy her a new sewing machine. Or tell her to knit herself a boat. Buying her a plough might work. But then I'm divorced.

I'm going to paint hers blue, mine maybe red/yellow and learn to sail....... while I build the Fairwind. Oh and the pressure is off while we learn because we have 380 motors to get us back "if" needed. :o

Turns into a home build..... the new place is on schedule so, it looks like 6-8 months until move in so, this little place must get staged for sale. That means the big projects have to go to storage and must de-personalize the living space! No Swifts - ECO or flatouts allowed...

Starting to become reality now....... At 53 it's the final home! Being a Geothermal and "maintenance free" more time for RC and Golf! ;)

Cleaned up the floor plan a bit with the wall changes, NO carpet and wood flooring throughout. Intire floor plan includes radiate floor heating including the garage, nice bonus. :)

The pond is still iced and can't wait for the total thaw.
