Hello!!
Finally here in south italy we got winter!! Summer finally is over..yes no more swimming no more beauty on beach but too no more sweaty and no more mosquitos!! :censored: :censored:
But the first reason i am happy for the cold season it's because i will start with my new kit i bought from USA, SIG PIPER CUB Clipped Wing 1/4 scale :D :D .
It's a huge box very very heavy as i never get
For me this is the second kit i build, the first was a Top Flite p-40 red box "u can see the building loog in here too" but i have the precius help from my uncle Tom!
I can say this kit it's really nice, very good wood quality, clear plans and a detail manual..unfortunally for me only in english..i think my english it's fine but i have problem for technical words..so..i hope guys you will help me with words i cant translate..
I started to work with fusolage how guide tell..and i can say it's very funny..the best way for practice with sanding paper!! :D
Uncle Tom make give me a tips, we build the second side of the fusolage not on the plans but on the top of the first fusolage, this is the best way for have 2 perfect sides..haaa over 40yrs experince make the difference!
Here you will see some photos..
Regards
David

Davide72,
I cant wait to see how this turns out for you. I built the 1/5 scale sig cub. I wish I had bought the 1/4. I have two sig kits and each were very easy builds. Here is a picture of my two sigs.

Thanks for that.

I always learn something from the build threads and look forward to picking up some tips from your build.

As far as the topic of language, you have to pass along some phrases alla Italiano. It's only fair! :D

I take it that you had to cut quite a few fuselage gussets.

I think EJ is making a joke. Charlotte is in the piedmont area of NC. I think he also meant you had to cut a lot of gussets for all those stick joints. Looking good so far.

No..Lake Norma Charlotte area
Lake Norman has the nickname "Piedmont Pond" because of all the Piedmont Airlines folks that live out there (local joke).
what's wrong with my fusolage??
Wrong? Nothing! Your fuselage looks great! The gussets are all individually cut out and look great. It appears that there are a lot of them. No joke there.

EJ, did you notice, in Italy, they use clamps to make glue joints?

David, this is a an inside joke between EJ and I!

Looks like a fun build! The SIG 1/4th scale J-3 Cub flys very well! Have fun!!

Tom, Up here in Minnesota, an R/Cer is measured by the amount of clamps he has on hand, which we always find to be about 1/2 of what we need!

The devices that you're using to hold the wood parts together while the glue dries. In your pictures they're the black things that look like large clothes pins, and the one that you tighten with the red colored handles and silver bars.

For laundry we use this things "see pic" in wood and they are perfect for glue and hold long stick or thin pieces or foil of balsa, they dont hold with to much force and dont mark the balsa..
I am keep working on my piper, i am curving the top fusolage stick..sorry i have big problem for translate in techinical english, anyway for curve the stick u use a mix of wather and ammonia ,after i use the iron hot for impress the curve.

Yes. Model builders have used these, here we call them "clothes pins" for a long time.

I have included a picture of the clamps that I use for model building. You will notice that they are the same as yours. The ones that look like the wooden laundry kind are called "spring clamps". The kind that you have to turn the handle to move the screw to give pressure is a "bar clamp". The small red one that your see in the shape of the letter 'C' is a c-clamp. You see, we keep things simple here. :D

Your fuselage is coming along nicely. It is nice and straight.

Awesome choice, David. I do not have any close up photos of mine. It has been several years since I owned it and I wasn't the original builder. If memory serves me correctly, you will need to split the cowl down the center to fit it over the 160 twin. No big deal though.

Looks good Dave! Do you have a small house? I spent a day in Crete, Greece on a military layover. All the houses were so tiny!!!! I did have a stop in Naples but I couldnt leave the airport. I did see houses next to the terminal and they were all tiny as well. Maybe Im just a spoiled American eh?? Your english is better than a lot of Americans, so don't apologize for your translation/grammar mistakes.

Well yes i know in Us you have big house.."bigger is better" i worked in NC so i know your huge house with back yard and huge garage..hmmm my dream house!
Here in italy in town we have appartments or condos only in brick not in wood. You can finde house like your only as country house but very very expensive. so a medium appartment (100 meters/square) cost almost double than a medium american house, well depend place and view but normally they cost more than in usa.:(:(

Nice posts on your build.I have built five cubs and worked an a BUSA cub for a friend. I like the sig clipped wing cub best for scale look. I think the BUSA cub is to wide to be scale. Maybe they took their measurements from a super cub. Anyway engines I have used are enya 120R os 120 and for the last 3 cubs the os Gemini . I have only crashed one cub the rest I have sold. The OS twin is the best engine for this plane. My latest cub has been modified from the sig kit , It features plug in wings, allowing for better scale appearance especially the fuse top, opening doors, All stits covering and paint with rib stitching etc. Robart scale working landing gear .On board glow , wheel pants aka Krier cubs, semi scale interior. i epoxy glass the areas of the cub fuse where the full scale had sheet metal.Makes it easier to obtain a scale looking windshield install. the dubden.com is a great reference site fort his plane.Ill post some pics latter today or tomorrow to show u some of the details.Of course going with scale detailing , adds a little more weight but the plane fly's rock steady and not so"floaty " as a lighter cub especially one with the full wing.they are a fun airplane One cub i had lasted for 18 years, flying from wheels and floats. crashed due to radio problem..

GODDDDDD!! it's just beautiful!! U did a great job sailor!!!I too install a remote glow, and i too think to put the light in the cockpit:D. To be honest this build was bit too long and i choice to keep build and not work too much on detail, but, i will work on that later:rolleyes:
Thx so much for your photo it help me...you could post more pis about the cowl?
David

sailor5017
Feb 04, 2010, 07:17 PM
not much more to say about the cowl two pic sshowit fairly clear. it's split crosswise centered on the crankshaft of the engine, A couple of clips glassed in the front inside of the cowl with small blind nuts to attach the front end together i think the real cub cowl is done fairly similar. Detailing should be considered and done while you are doing the build, it,s far easier to do a good job of detailing when you can get at things. Servos for rudder and elevator are accessed thru hatches under the plane behind cabin area. I used a fiberglass push rod for elevator and fabricated a fitting so it is all inside the fuse, rudder uses pull pull cable to a tiller bar then to servo.Ill send more pics if you want tell me what youd like to see

How do you do that covering job? Do you cover with white, then add red on top of that? I'm new but want to do this to my Goldberg anniversary J3.

sailor5017
Feb 06, 2010, 06:40 PM
the covering is stits lite from F&M enterprises in Texas, it's the material the full size ultralight aircraft, probably about the same ssig coverall, I also use the full stits method of painting, if you go to the F&M web site they explain the process of painting , The covering is a washed out white and requires sealing priming and then painting. It takes a bit more work than prepainted covering but allows for detailing such as rib stitching etc

Little trick for tape lines.....

Paint the base color, mask the scheme off, and paint the base color around the seams of the tape to seal the edge. Any bleed through will be the same as the base. Once this dries spray your next color and pull the tape. You will get a razor sharp tape line this way.

When you cutting out the windows?

Looking great! I wish mine was to the point yours is.

Bella build David,
sorry to see you crashed your P.40 earlier in this thread, that must be the old Topflite Warhawk? Mine still hangs from the workshop roof!
What caused yours to crash?

Love the paint scheme on the Cub.

Sad, that's why most of my models get built but not flown. Stupid, but I prefer to build!!

Your Cub looks superb, and I can't wait to see it airborne.

Thanks for the kind comment on the P.40.
I worked repairing and refinishing car bodys and 'custom painted' motorcycles for many years before having to retire, so painting models is not difficult, and I love to play around with the airbrush.
I love the 'sunburst' type paint scheme. I painted a friends Stampe a few years ago, heres a picture.

I'll drag the P.40 down from the roof and take some more photos' for you, but please, this is your thread for the Cub!
