Hi guys, i need some input as to what would be a suitable setup for my greatplanes edge 540. The edge has a wingspan of 78" and should come in at around 14-15 pound, I like to fly 3D so a good punch out of a hover is a must but I dont want to make the airframe over heavy. Hacker A60-18L on 12s is an option or is this too much power and weight? just getting a little confused so some input from guys with some knowledge would be great. Any ideas? thanks.

Interested myself. Hopefully someone will chime in.

I would go with an A60-14L. A 20x10 apc-e should give you around 3000 watts on 12s. I am converting an 87" edge(19lbs.) using an A60-18L. With the 18L you would need to swing at least a 22x12, 21x13 to get the same power. You may run into a prop clearence issue. Hope this helps....

The 14L will certainly fly the plane, but in my opinion would be a little over kill, and 12S lipos is more weight then you need to carry. We've been flying the 16L and 18L in 87 and 89 inch wingspan planes up to 20 pounds with plenty of power on 12S.

If it was me, I would probably go with a Hacker A60-16M or 18M on 10S 4000-4500 mah packs.

The 18L does fine on 22" props, but it really doesn't start to shine until you get up to 24" props. A 24x12 really makes it sing. The 16M should be pretty happy on a 20-21" prop. These motors are very under rated, and will take a lot of power.

If you wanted to go for a light setup, I have no doubt that the S line would fly the plane pretty well, but I always go for the power... :D

I'd agree with 10S. I fly a sebart sukhoi at 184 oz on 8s 5000 mah batteries and there's a reasonable amount of power there. This year's batteries, at least the Hyperions are 20% more powerful than last year and so you need less cells.

I'm build an 85" Yak 54.... AUW should be about the same as your Edge ~15lbs.
Here's my setup

Motor: Power 160
ESC: Suppo 80HA ESC
Prop: APC 20x10E (APC20010E)
Battery: 5000mah 22c 10S
Flying Weight w/Battery: ~15.3 lbs
Amps 76
Volts 36
Watts 2740
Input Watts/Pound RPM 179/7250

flyracer,

Whose Yak is that? Where do you fly at?

I'll be interested to see if that thing really comes in at 15 lbs. If so, excellent job!

15 Pounds on an 85" Yak!! That's LIGHT!!!! Did you do any modding to expect it to be that low?

Crazy light! I'd love to see this plane because a 15lb Giant Scale plane flying on an $84.00 motor and a 10S setup is very intriguing!

Gee, thanks guys. Plenty of good advice here, I just dont want to put something in this plane and think man this is underpowered or man this is too heavy and way to powerful. Some say that you can never have too much power but extra power comes at the expense of extra weight and the deterioration of flight characteristics. I'm thinking 10s is the go.

At 85" I'm guessing it's the Hyperion Yak 54 1.80.

correct me if i'm wrong...The Hyperion Yak 1.80 has an extended electric only extended firewall so you dont need stand-offs for the motor plus a bunch of laser cutting on it. This one is solid ply, unless its been modified. Plus the ailerons are too small on this one :D

You're probably right. To tell you the truth I've never seen the inside of the Hyperion Yak. I just knew it was 85" and used the same covering scheme as this plane....although so do most Yaks.

I picked up the kit from http://www.valleyviewrc.com/ $390 shipped to my door. It's an RCLeague kit (I believe 2nd generation kit as this one came with CF wing tube, CF stabilizer tube, CF landing gear and fairly good quality hardware). Tom over at ValleyViewRC is a great guy.

I plan on flying this one out at the Ironwood airpark (Apache Junction). I think it's to big for the park where I've been flying the 70" Electric Yak (corner of Cooper and Hunt Hwy).

Overall, I'm very pleased with the kit.... check out the thread on Flyinggiants if you're interested in more details on what others are doing with the kit.

I'm basing the weight on the 85" kit to what I learned on the 70" electric Yak (from Cermark). Specs called for 8.5lbs to 10lbs on the 70" Yak and I was able to get her to an AUW of 9.5lbs with an 8s 3700mah 25c Pack. I think 15lbs to 15.5lbs should be doable on the 85" version.... not to say I've never been fatally optimistic on other projects :o Really, the target is to get to 160watts+ per pound for good performance.

This one is the RCLeague version with the Russion Thunder color scheme. They also offer it in the traditional yellow/black scheme. As I was telling Chad, I got the kit from ValleyViewRC for $390 shipped to my door.
