I know that motors in your RC cars can be driven with electronic devices
without resorting to power resistors. Are these using Pulse Width Modulation
and how do they do the reversing?

Yes, they use PWM. Most don't do reversing because of the extra resitance in
the circuit (from the fet). The ones that do have a extra set of fet's cross
linked to the motor.

Yes I would like to build my own but for a very small low power motor. Where
can I see some schematics showing the basics. Would like to control the ESC
with a Joystick directly without the RC. Possible?
