View Full Version : Thinking about going nitro (tc3)

My day of racing my electric TC3 today at the local track just didnt feel
fun. Racing stock has gotten boring, and to go modified would require a
large cash laydown for newer batteries, comm lathe, etc.
My friend just bought a nitro TC3 and I've been thinking about going and
buying a nitro tc3 myself, the RTR version (because it's cheap). I'll just
swap out the radios and then sell off my electric setup, all batteries,
charger, etc to make up for the cost of getting started with the nitro tc3.
My thinking is that some noise, smoke and fuel will re-add some excitement
to my race day. I dont win often...(but I do get 1st occasionally) so if
I'm not going to win often, I might as well have fun. I think gas might
help with this, since it'll add some reaslism to the racing, and I wont have
to carry 7 packs, a charger, an extension cord, power strip, misc other
electric related items, etc, to the track every weekend.
Besides, eventually i'll have to replace my motor and batteries to be
competetive and thats going to require a big investment.
Will the pull start make a huge difference in top speed? Is it completely
useless (ie: more frustration than it's worth in a racing environment)? Is
it ok for a newbie to nitro who intends to eventually switch to a start box?
I dont want to get nickle and dimed to death for "required" addons after
buying this car...at least not in the first few months.
Any comments?

Nitro should boost the fun factor for ya.
There is nothing wrong with a pull start. Even for racing. The power gain by
removing it it so minumal, you will never notice. Unless you are trying to
shave hundreths of a second off your lap time! I left mine on my modified
Super Nitro, and I use a Starter box. If the battery in the box ever dies, I
can still pull start it.

Thanks Jon. I had a look at it this evening and almost walked out with the
beast but had second thoughts. Now I'm regretting it 'cause I wont sleep
all night. I'll be there first thing in the morning ;)
BTW, is a head temp sensor of some sort an absoloute requirement? Can I get
by doing the "spit" test, etc, for a few months without siezing my engine?

Tom,
I used to race electric (15 years ago) and I still love running my E-Maxx for
fun because it's so problem free.
My other three cars are nitro though. They're messy and sometimes hard to
tune, but they are a blast.
I have a Nitro TC3 and love it. It is such a simple sweet design. Depending
on where you race, the type of track, you will want to add a 2 speed (if there
ia a long straight of way). Otherwise, you can win with stock. Don't worry
about the pull start. If you eventually get a bump starter, you can remove the
pull start completely. I removed the pull start from my HPI RS4 MT (because
the spring broke), but I'll continue to use the pull start on the TC3 until it
breaks.

How about tires ? What will be the average life off the tires on the n tc3 ?
I'm looking for a n tc3 for parking lot racing. First I had a Serpent impact
for that but that thing just eats tires. Wil I get a descent tire life on
a parkinglot laydown circuit ?
Can I fit the n tc3 flywheel/clutch on my rc10gt engines (shortened crank) ?
Thanks,
Joost

It's official. I am now a nitro guy. I just walked out with a new RTR NTC3
to replace my current heavily raced TC3 racer. Havent even broken it in
yet.... trying to hold off until I have some time so I dont rush it.
My old TC3, charger, batteries, radio, etc should be up on ebay in the next
few days.

Sure, most guys do not have temp sensors anyway..I personally use a temp
gun, but thats just me being picky!.
