Would anyone like to recommend a good 30 size helicopter for a beginner? I
talked to a guy at Heliproz and he recommend the Kyosho Caliber 30. I
really like the idea that its is very quite and smooth but some of the
reviews I've read seem to suggest that one should change several of the
stock plastic parts for Correct metal parts adding to the cost of the
chopper. There are other issues addressed the these reviews
http://www.jason.net/heli/c30.htm and
http://www.ifrance.com/waltercedric/Helico/caliber/review/review.htm.
I'm also a little worried about the cost/availability of the parts. (just
got the June issue of Model Airplane News. They have a review of the
Caliber 30. At the end they list 4 hits and no misses with this kit. I
wish they would do a more through review. I think we can all agree that
pretty much all helicopters have hits AND misses. )
I also called Cyberheli. They seem to recommend the Rator 30 v2 for a
beginner. (I'm not starting from scratch... I have 15 years experience
flying R/C airplanes and have been practicing helicopters on G2.) From what
I understand the Raptor is a good helicopter and the parts are cheap and
easy to get, but I'm sure it has some misses also.
So which 30 helicopter do you recommend for a beginner and why?
What servos are required? ( I have a 9Cap Futaba radio and will get a
Futaba 401 gyro/servo combo.) Are standard size 40ish oz/inch and .22 sec
servos with ball bearings good enough for a 30 size helicopter?
Thanks for the help.

The two favourites seem to be
Century Hawk Sport - For its incredibly low price, and it's pretty good
Raptor 30 - Because it's good and there's just so many of them so getting
help and spares tends to be a little easier.
I went for the Hawk Sport - even though no one at my club has one (90%
Raptors). The guys were scornful at first but those who have tried it have
been very impressed.
Cheers,
Nigel

Nothing wrong with the Caliber. It's a cheap to buy heli designed for
newbies.

ALL heli's can have "upgrades" made in metal, so the Caliber's no exception.
Having just spent the last 2 hours poring over one, I doubt it NEEDS them to
fly right though.

Welcome to the wonderful world of advertising driven mags.

It'd do the job in the same was as ANY "entry level" heli would, but the
Raptor also has a list of available "upgrades" long enough to choke a horse.
(It's all about money after all)

ALL heli's have misses as you rightly pointed out, but that's true of
everything in the wrold. Nothing's perfect and that certainly applies to toy
heli's, but either the Rap, the Caliber, the Century Hawk, the Concept VR or
the Shuttle will get you started at bugger all in the way of real money.

The one you like the look of best:-))) Actually, get the one that the other
flyers at your chosen club use. Then at leaast you've got "on the spot" help
based on brang/model experience.

Anything from 10 quid Futaba 3001's 150 quid to digitals. All will get you
flying and some will do it cheaply. How deep're your pockets?

Perfectly.

I'm in exactly the same boat. I ended up getting a Raptor kit from
Heliproz. So far, it seems like a very nice kit (and the Heliproz guy
was very nice as well). I took a look at the Raptor and the Century Hawk
at the WRAMS show this year, and I liked the look of the Raptor a little
better. I also like the fact that it came with an engine and a muffler.
I can't really say that it's any better than anything else, but I can
say that the quality of the kit is as good or better than I expected. So
far I've built the frame and the main rotor head and haven't had any
major problems.

If you are going 30 size, no not go Kyosho. I got so turned off by the
Nexus and now I'm under the opinion that "if Tower Hobbies carries it, it's
crap". I agree with the "Raptor" choice. The V2 is very impressive.
