Hello,
I am wandering if there exist unexpensive and readily available GPS chips in dip package that can be used in combination with microcontrollers and some other simple elements
for authomatic model guidance when it is out of transmitter/receiver range?

Not chips, but modules. Most all of the modules are in surface mount packages but here is one mounted on a DIP breakout board. http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8146
Main problem would be the navigation software. The GPS modules only put out latitude, longitude, altitude, speed and track(direction of travel) and usually have no navigation software built in.
PS here is another page with more modules mounted on boards. http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/categories.php?c=86
Also, this module says it interfaces to a GPS module to do basically what you want. http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8785
