Guys,
I wanted to show you a new bird.
Dean asked me to design him a nice flying very efficient wing for him. 14hrs of CFD and 3 days later this is what we got. 13.1:1 L/D
Flying weight is 2kg
WS is 1.4m
It has a 4" dome with a modular pan/tilt setup, the nose can be changed for different payloads.
We just got back from its 4th flight and it performs excellent. Dean had a chance to fly it and said its a keeper.
IMU Atto will go in tomorrow or Thursday. Wish us luck.

Nice looking wing. What is the center cylinder made out off? Where are you mounting the GPS antenna?

Center fuse is all carbon and the GPS will be mounted external for the prototype. The next bird will have a special spot internal just for the GPS and will not be blocked by carbon fiber.

Wow, that looks great, nice work!
Does that plastic dome cause video distortion?

Very nice and good luck with the maiden - look forward to seeing the results!
...and PLEASE make it an ARF! :)

This particular dome is not optical quality; it was installed for prototyping and proof of concept. I am told the cleardomes.com has optical quality but I have not tested that claim just yet.
icebear, we can work something out ;)

Jimmy, it’s incredibly strong, probably much stronger then it needs to be. I will be leaving one layer of 6k carbon cloth off the next pull.
Thanks for the kind words; I really like your bird as well!

So what the best glide angle and sink rate?
;)
Yep cleardomes is the way to go and extend the camera out into the dome to get more coverage!

Depends on the wind speed ;)
Thanks for the tip on Clear domes. Do you know if the are truly optical quality? How about durability?

Chris,
How long did it take you to design that wing? Looks alot like the one of ours.. Unfortunately due to NDA's being signed, I cant say too much about who or where it is going to be used other than it is designed to land in the water...

Myron,
We can not compete as we are a commercial company.
They won’t let us.....
BTW: Nice birdy!

Commercial companies are allowed to compete aslong as they compete in the 'spirit of the competition". So going in with a fully integrated system you have developed for commercial sale wouldn't be in the spirit of the competition. However if you were to develop a system to cater to the needs of to competition in the same timeframe as the other competitors and with similar resources then I think it would be perfectly acceptable. Just my 2c but I am sure Mick in the challenge thread would be able to help you out with that.

Well that is nice to know and I really do appreciate you saying something.... BUT Mick and I are good friends; I spent the past 6 out of 8 months with him as our company is based in Brisbane. He specifically said we could not compete. Believe me if we were allowed we would and if all I had to do was create a new bird specifically for the comp that would have been no problem at all....
If this is true there are a lot of companies out there that will be a bit disappointed...
Thanks again,
Chris

Ahh I see.
In that case disregard my comment I was only going off what is displayed in the official channels and that is that small companies are welcome 'in the spirit of the competition'.
No problem though. :)

Joey,
I think they mean if you are a small company that is looking at the feasibility of a UAS company. I could be wrong.......
Anyhow, we were listed as competitors the past two years, made all the way through deliverable 2 both times and ran into technical issues as the last moment. Now with the many years experience we unfortunately can compete... It’s a bummer but life goes on. I look very forward to your results in the OBC.
Thanks,
Chris

Ummmmmm
14hrs of CFD
3 days to build......
Platform is completely different, airfoils are completely different, winglets and fuselage are completely different.........
I am curious how anybody could say these two aircraft are alike beyond the fact that they both are flying wings with a tube.....
If anybody would like to build this bird feel free, there is nothing patentable or secret about this bird or any flying wing.
Root: MH 60 17" chord
Tip: MH45 8" chord
2 deg of twist
4" fuselage
Sweep 31deg on LE
WS: 56"
Dome: Cleardomes.com
Good luck and look forward to seeing the bird in other people’s hands! Please post all pictures!!!
Thanks,
Chris

Looks alot like the one of ours..So Myron - Do you still think, after seeing Chris' reply, that the Jackaroo is in any way based on an RP Flight System's bird?
I have NEVER seen the plane you showed before you posted it a couple days ago. Chris designed and built his Jackaroo about 3 weeks ago. He picked MH airfoils and ran 10+ hours of CFD before making any hard copies of the Jackaroo. His plane has a larger span, a 4" diam fuselage, different wing sweep, and as mentioned above completely different airfoils.
The facts regarding the RP Flight Systems "Spectra" are these: The Spectra was designed to overcome a couple limitations of the T.G.E. autopilot namely no airspeed sensing or gain scheduling, so the Spectra is designed to have similar stability across a speed range. The Spectra is VERY stable, it is a bird that excells at slower flight but can hit 70 knots if it needs to, and my favorite: it can cruise on < 3 Amps from a 3s LiPo voltage pack. It works great.
MY POINT: the Spectra (and other RP planes) design was NOT stolen or copied in any way by Chris.

Dean,
Being RPFS has an NDA with you, it just seemed odd that you would request a third party to "design a sleek wing" for you when you have spent so much time with Gene and the Spectra. We also have a variant that is very similar to the one Chris built. It is a two peice wing with a single tube in the middle and it has been around for almost a year. It was designed as a tester and we just dont use it much.
After speaking with Gene offline, I consider this issue resolved and a non issue form this point forward.
Chris, Sorry if I made it sound like you coppied one of our birds.

Myron,
No hard feelings at all, you will find that I am an extremely honest person and believe that screwing people over is as low as you can go. There is no room in this business for people like that. I look forward to working with both you and Gene in the future and hope that we may be able to help each other out to become successful.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.
On Dean’s defense: He did not ask me to design the bird specifically, we have been speaking about an Atto bird for almost a year now. I was board waiting on funds from my employer for a project and decided to build the Jackaroo. When I got here to Phoenix with Dean and after he had a chance to fly the bird I told him it is his. What that meant was if he likes he can produce it as a sellable product under AttoPilot. I hope this clears up the confusion.
Thank you,
Chris McNair

Myron,
I have a few thoughts and would like to talk to both you and Gene about just that.
I agree the US does not want us to profit from our hard earned work...... So Non for profit in the USA and for profit everywhere else!
Oh If it were that easy ;)

I am New to UAV or RC Air Planes. I need to know what are the basic UAV Air frames to creat. Can anyone point me to any site or pice of information for building wigs (Delta wings or Shadow 2000). with foam or wood.
Iam familier with ellectrics and hardware (Gumstix Paparazi Autopilot.) with Wireless Maxstream Wireless.
Thanks in Advance..
