So I've got a bunch of broken 27mhz rx's some do work but what are the main components to a working tx and rx?

The encoder and the RF board or module. Probably both combined on one board in those old rigs for the Tx.
Probably a regen Rx and decoder for the other end. Maybe an RF stage, oscillaror, mixer, IF amp and decoder for multi channel, & more expensive ones.
Not really worth doing much to 27mc stuff. Probably illegal anyway.
Look 2 or 3 threads down in the forum for a simple (really?) DIY 2.4ghz Tx, & buy a Rx.

Usually the joysticks and case are recyclable. The Rx usually can find a good home in the round file that sits along side the desk or workbench unless you just want to play around with them for the heckuvit.

i guess i'll just search for DIY transmitter and receiver on any channel/frequency. By the way are the oscillators those like white things with wires wrapped around them?

Those are coils. DIY RX is not a good project for beginners. Better to start with something simple.
