Hi Guys - I am looking to do my first GS electric aircraft and have heard good reports on the EF Yak 88` and love both the looks and size. I think it will just fit in my Audi S3 ( fingers crossed ) . I have seen this done on 12s with a Hacker and Plentteburg (?) brushless and in Australia, the prices are pretty high on this high end engines but i spoted what looks like a real bargin. Was hoping to get any feedback from Pilot who have used this engine and from pilots who can tell me if this would be a great choice.

I fly agressive 3D and IMAC and want unlimted verticle on 12s and hovering at say, 50-60% throttle settings which i hear is comparable with the Hacker etc.

Bing,
Have a look at Geoff's very informative thread that features this motor: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=933906

The search feature in RCGroups also works a treat! :)

Cheers
Peter

thanks - not sure what to search under " Turnigy C80100-130 " I guess

For best 3D performance I think bigger is not always better.
This motor is almost two pounds heavier than a Neu 1521 with gearbox.
Cheaper though, and not made to order with associated delivery times.

I fully agree - I tend to pick the right engine for the right airframe but 70` is as big as i have gone so far and that looks massive to me so an 88` should be great ! With low demand in Australia for these big brushless motrs prices are still crazy. That and throw in 4 x 5s lipos and a ESC and its a fairly pricy plane. I want to see if i can do it on 4 x 5s 4500 25cs as i have them for my other yak and Sukhoi already. Leaning alot so far !!~

I'm not knowledgeable on 3D for sure, but if you go with the big 80-100 series Turnigy, be sure to change out all the bearings. They have been proven bad on numerous motors. I change them before the first flight. Get it out of the way so I don't have to disassemble later.

Power is not questioned. It will pull your model so hard on the ground, you cannot hold it back without breaking something! On 12S and 22x10 prop that is. These seem to be susceptible to heat, so keep it cooled down. that may mean no 3D; as I said, I don't fly that way.

The Turnigy 100amp ESC is also a bargain. They have a newer model that will pull over 150 amps for 10 seconds as I recall. I will go with those when I order some more.

In the long run, if I was "deep pockets," I would like to fly Hackers and such, but the Turnigy's seem to do the job at a modest price.

Also, be sure to get the newest model that has the screws in the outer jacket to keep the magnets in line. In other words, don't buy a used one!

We've flown these enough to say that they are pretty reliable, but like all things, not perfect. I think the Texas heat has to do with some of the reliablility factor. Do everything you can to ingest air into the motor and electronincs.

You can get away with much less motor. I use the Turnigy 80-100-130 on a 33% (24 lb) plane. On a 27x12 it provides 40 lbs of thrust.

I would think that the 63-64-230 would be plenty of motor for a 50cc plane.

The version 4 Sentilon speed controller is a great performer

Geoff, thanks alot - I think that engine may be better suited to a 30%. Have you guys put one of these in to hard use yet ? I really need to do the numbers better as i think i may answer a few of my questions....that or i will probebly have alot more. Btw, Geoff, looked at your pix from the IMAC comp, some nice planes there.

LBJ, Thanks for the feedback. As Sydney has very warm weather 8 month of the year i am in a similar situation to you i guess but building an 88` Yak and not being able to huck it down low would be like owning a farrari but only driving it in first and second gear. Frustrating !

Use a Turnigy ESC ( 80 amp ) on my Yak and was not overly impressed. It did not have a smooth linier feel too it and hovering was a bit tricky, could not really hold it level for too long. Changed it to a Duelsky and now its rock solid.

Thanks again guys. Very helpfull.
