Yes you can use it with rechargeable AAs. Also if it is currently transmitting when you're using with the sim you can remove the crystal which will stop it transmitting. Then it won't to use up the batteries anywhere near as fast.
BTW you do know that in Australia it's illegal to fly on 72MHz don't you ?

For now stick to flying in the simulator, that's legal provided you've taken the crystal out.
If you bought the plane in Australia get it replaced with something legal. Otherwise perhaps next time check before buying radio equipment from overseas. Different countries very often have completely different rules.
I doubt if it's possible to convert the radio to any legal frequency and anyway that's a bit off topic in a Simulator forum here so try asking in the Radios forum.

No -
The underlying transmission frequency will stay the same at 72Mhz - the crystals simply set the 10khz band that are used on this frequency.
Legal frequencies for your country are (in addition to the 27Mhz used by toys):
* 29MHz FM primarily surface vehicles
* 36MHz FM primarily aircraft
* 40MHz FM also for general use
The 40MHz band is used the least, due to potential interference from two-way radios and paging systems.
So you should be using a 36Mhz system for aircraft.
Did you purchase the plane from a shop in your country or purchased it over the net from overseas ? - If you purchased it locally then take it back to the shop and ask for your money back as they are selling non compliant equipment for use in your country
If you google the subject you'll find more info, but in summary:
Breaches of Licence Conditions
It is important that operators of radio-controlled models comply with all conditions in the class licence. Subsection 132(3) of the Act provides that:
'Operation of a radio-communications device is not authorised by a class licence if it is not in accordance with the conditions of the licence'.
If any condition of licence is breached (for example, operating on a frequency not mentioned in the class licence) the operator is no longer authorised to operate under the class licence. In this instance, the operator would be liable for prosecution.
More details http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_1285#breaches which also contain links to the actual act that was passed by your government.

Oh dear.... looks like you have two choices....
Carry on using the model and risk getting prosecuted if found out (slim chance if you are in the middle of nowhere... possible chance if near a town or city.
or
Put this down to experience, and go to a local model shop and purchase something that is legal in your country. Then advertise the model from the states on E-bay and sell it to someone living in country where 72Mhz is legal
