Alright guys, I haven't been on this forum since the start of this thread, so I figured it was time to start using it to inform our masses.
Use this thread to post upcoming combat events in the DFW area, as well as head checks to see who will be there.
Starting tonight we will be flying e-combat at the Renner Renegade field between Plano and Richardson. Monday, and Wednesday through Friday from 7 Pm till dark. Saturday and Sunday, we may start earlier, depending upon heat and schedules.
Everyone is encouraged to get out there, because the days are already getting shorter and we are into the last half of our Renegade weeknight combat season.
Also remember, Sunday morning combat is at Hawk field in Mansfield from 10 AM till afternoon heat or hunger causes a ceasefire. Every 2nd Saturday at the DEAF fly-in at Eastfield we also combat, but the weather has been killing us so far this year on those days.
See you then.

What are you guys flyin? WWII's, eJets? FF's? It's a little too far for me to drive to Plano/Richardson on a regular basis, but perhaps I can get a group going out on the west side of town and we can meet occasionally at Hawk Field.

gsjames, we mostly fly the "Top Gun" style WWII planes, or something similar that we design. We also play some silly combat games getting old trainers, cubs, etc. involved too. Let me know if you want to come out, or you get something going near you.
I think that we have met at Hawk field. I am out there on Sunday mornings flying combat with John, Cliff and the others. I help out with training new flyers sometimes too.

We are supposed to be having a good turnout tonight for weeknight combat. Everyone try to be ready by 7 PM for the start of the first round.

Hey guys, can you update me on what combat is going on where? I have done combat at Eastfield a few times with the guys that were coming over every couple of Saturdays, but I forgot the club name.
We were using the little profile foamy war birds, not sure what this would be called or what class it is.
Thanks

HEY Birdie! Where ya been? Ya just might convince me to make a yardbird, however I prefer SSC and OpenB. (electric works just fine there too!) I don't have many weekends off, but when do you guys fly at BlackSheep? You can also fly at WAMS of course...
Edit: I just checked out the price of a Yardbird F-15. $55. I can build 3 SSC combat planes for that price. I might be willing to make a BluCor 'clone' but other than that, no thanks, I'll stick with SSC and Open B combat.
Check out these links for electric powered SSC combat for a LOT less than $55

Pardon my ignorance, but what are you referring to as 'real' combat? I looked at your links, but there are no rules, plane requirements, plans.

If you go to the front page of the Radio Controlled Combat Association (RCCA) website and look just to the left of the photo of Scott launching a 2548 P-51, you will see a blue block with links to the current AMA and RCCA rules for all of the classes currently being flown. The menu bar at the top of the main page gives links to many different features of the site. I especially recommend that you thoroughly check out the "debrief" section of the forum as it contains many, many photos from different contests around the country.
As far as my use of the term "real" combat, it was a somewhat 'snotty' thing for me to say and I probably shouldn't have used that term. FFF/Depron and other 'light e' combat is a LOT of fun and I have several of them, and am planning to build more. However, none of the light-e events are official or even provisional in nature, and the rules vary widely from one area of the country to the next. There IS a light e forum section on the RCCA website however and there is some good info there.
The links that I posted earlier were directed to Kevin "Birdie" Birdwell to show the advances that have been made in electric powered SSC and Open B combat planes.
To the best of my knowledge, WWII "light-e" combat was created by DFW's own John Brodie (Irone). John is a member of the Hawk Field Fliers in Mansfield and also flies regularly on the Thursday afternoon indoor session at the Bedford Boys Ranch. John is a great guy. 2DogsR/C has been actively promoting WWII and e-Jet light-e combat. It's FUN, but SSC and Open B are a LOT more fun (in my opinion). I believe that they fly light-e combat on Sunday mornings starting at 10 am at Hawk Field and fly one heat per hour until they are finished. I think they are flying mostly e-jet these days
We fly BOTH i.c. and electric-powered combat planes (together) in all of the RCCA/AMA events. The electrics are at no disadvantage and may in fact have some advantages over the i.c. aircraft.
You will not find any links to SSC or Open B plans on the RCCA website BUT you will find links to suppliers of kits and plans. As for myself, I've been using the "Battle Axe" as my SSC and Open B airplane since it is simple to build and repair. I initially bought a 3-pack from Treneff RC to get started in SSC, but now mostly build my airplanes from scratch as it is much cheaper (<$15 per plane) and I can customize them as desired. The Avenger is also an outstanding design and there are others.
We have what is probably the MOST active group of RCCA Combat fliers anywhere in the US right here in DFW, so Keith, you are in the right place.
Our next combat event is a week from this coming Saturday, Oct 17th at the North Dallas club field. You will find a link to it in the events/calendar section of the RCCA website. We have been getting a LOT of new fliers lately. Fantastic! The more we have the more FUN it is! Hope to see you there.
If you want to fly one of my SSC or Open B birds, send me a pm and we'll meet at some field that is convenient to both of us and I'll give you a shot at it.

I am very interested and would love to come watch. I am not an AMA member, and I have not joined any flying clubs.
I guess you could say I am new to RC as an adult. When I was a kid, we had a falcon 56" that my dad and I learned to fly with. After the inevitable crash, we never got back into it. I have been flying scratch-built foamies thanks to the wonderful people here at rcgroups.com for about a year now. I bought a Yardbird YB22 about 2 months ago, and I love flying it.
I am not opposed to getting an AMA membership if it is required, up to this point I have been putting all of my spare pennies into parts and glue and batteries and so on. I guess I have hit the point where flying by myself in an open field behind a warehouse has begun to lose its luster. My eyes lit up when I saw combat, so I would like to see what it has to offer.
I must add, you are quite brave offering to let a complete stranger fly one of your planes. I may very well take you up on your offer.
Thank you for the information, I think I am hooked and I haven't even looked at all the information on it yet!

Vinster, don't think there has been any combat activity recently. The club there is DEAF and we have an active club session on the second Sat. of every month starting at 10 am. Some of the meetings in cooler months are held at this time as well and meetings are every other month, Nov. being the next.
Brodie tried hard to get an active group going at Eastfield, but not much luck. He and/or Doug will stop and help anyone and all but stand on their head when you say combat.

True, there is not much light eCombat / Parkflier-type going on in the DFW area, BUT this is THE MOST ACTIVE area in the country for RCCA-type events including SSC (Slow, Survivable Combat). Many of the competitors are exclusively electric powered and they don't give up ANYTHING in performance to the i.c. powered SSC planes.
We have a contest 10 out of 12 months of the year. Our next contest in on Nov 14th at the Texoma RC club field. Go to www.rccombat.com and check out the EXTENSIVE forums and the contest calendar.
Brodie is a great guy and has really busted his behind trying to get light eCombat going and keep it going. The only problem is that combat, like most competitive events, only appeals to a small percentage of fliers. Most are "sport" and "pattern-type" fliers. Ya' know, I always thought that pattern and IMAC type fliers were a lot like male figure skaters. They draw "pretty lines" in the sky, but you are never really too sure about them...:D Real men fly combat and racing...
Oh, BTW. Lee Liddle has developed an "Open Class" Parkflier electric airplane based on his Falcon and using the 3696 power package. I flew it last month and it flies GREAT! Here is the link: http://www.rccombat.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=13128 He has also posted a video on YouTube. Check it out
