View Full Version : Discussion Central California Coast Model Boats
toesup

Shaun H and I had a very successful chat over lunch earlier today to discuss the possibility of setting up a Model Boat group in the form of a 'club' covering the Central Coast area of California.
As far as we are aware, there are no model boat groups between San Francisco and the Hansen Dam Irregulars in Northern LA.
We decided that our first objective would be to gauge how many boat modellers there are in the Central Coast area and if they would be interested in forming a model group.
Our aim would be (as a group) to secure some water's from one of the local City's that we would be able to run Sail, Electric and possibly gas / nitro on.. as well as welcome builders of static model boats. There was also discussion regarding a 'Monthy' formal meeting where we could discuss building / running of boats and share our knowlege between the different disciplines.
These meetings could possibly take place at a local school (with a pool  ) where we could also get the kids involved in the building of model boats.
If there are boaters out there that are interested in such a group and live within the Central Coast area, please PM either Shaun or myself.

(Oh yeah, and you just might get to play in the shop too?? ;) )

Hey Toes,
Ask the same question here.: http://modeltugforum.com/index.php
There are many members from the States...You may get a couple of interested parties.

We'd take members from anywhere! Lot's of options opened up as we discussed possibilities for how we could meet if we attracted a larger geological region, but our focus area would probably be best between Monterey and Santa Barbara/Ventura.
Toesup and I live pretty much dead center in that area and if we get enough interest in the region, we'd be happy to put the work into starting up the club and getting the details worked out.
If you know of anyone in that area, send them our way! :D

Update:
Things are moving along and we are starting to get some response even without posting the flyers yet!
MarcRacer18 is right here and I have some advanced notice that one of the owners of our LHS might be interested in joining in. So, if you know of anyone in the area that wants to at least run with other boat-heads, let me know.
Toes- check your PM's... you are waaay behind on them! LOL! :D
We even have a place to run now, apparently there is a nice local pond that caters to some RC boating activities! The owners appear to like RC boats as well so we may have sponsors lined up... getting good!

Camarillo is probably closer to you desron48, but then again, so would the Hansen Dam Irregulars if you wanted something a little less formal.
We'll take anyone that wants to come along but just for sake of geocentricity, I'd be disingenuious if I didn't point out closer groups! :D
By the way, our website is http://cccsns.spaces.live.com and you can take a look at what is going on over there (not much since it's all 'tentative' at the time being). You can post direct inquires and emails to the club. Both Toes and I will get the emails.

We are looking at October 25th as our first get together date at Franklin Hot Springs ( http://franklinhotsprings.com/ )
This should be interesting.
RC Groups folks, feel free to post on this thread for any regarding the workings of the club, everyone else can go to the webpage.
We can take 'honorary' members (those out of the area) by just joining our Windows Live Network (you can do it even on a Mac :D ). If you'd like an invite, just email us at cccsns@live.com and we'll send you one.

Boy, I'll say! 100.1°F, mineral water? I can't wait to see what all your boats metal parts are going to look like afterwards.
I once went into a natural hot springs, the one up in Mammoth. My silver ring, neckchain, and cross all turned black. :censored:

I'll have you know that the water temp of the lake is a nice 80-some degree-F temp, and the addition of mud and a little weeds makes to polish any prop nicely. If you look at the site it should state that the pool temp is 100.1(raised since i first went there..) and the pool(quite big,100'by 30') drains into the lake, then from the lake to a small creek. I've never had any probs running in that water yet but if one of my props decide to turn black or shrivel up after all these years i'll let you know.

Hey, our boats will have much longer lifespan with all this healthy 'spa' treatment water! Sadly, it's probably not for warships, they'll be too relaxed to fight and having "I like it hotter, more HEAT!" macho competitions.

There was an old man who ran the place when i first went up there, he claimed to have a 300 lb catfish living in his lake and warned about sailing anytype of boat in the water during mating season... Aparently somebody lost a good rig to "an angry something" in the water...
He also explained how the spring well is set to give the perfect pool temp and how the 121 minerals(including H20) have magical healing powers... I think he was 96 two years ago... and still living(?).

Just a reminder to those in the area, we will be running on Oct. 25th at Franklin Hot Springs Lake/Pond (haven't seen it, can't quantify the size! :D)
We have several people coming and I'll be there even if I don't have anything running! (read: Not enough hours in the day!). It's north SLO county so maybe even Aerominded can make it! (About an hour or so drive south from Monterey). Any Hansen Dam lakers are welcome, no matter the boat type, come on up if you feel like it. We've been having great weather up here so far (did I just jinx it? ).
Inland folks, if near Bakersfield, it's just a jaunt west out the 46/58. So, c'mon by!
I haven't heard anything about a time yet but I'd guess anything in the 8-10am range would be good.
I'll try making up a flyer for the event.

Shaun... Just went 'on the air'... a couple a'days ago. It usually takes the spiders at least two months to start finding a new site... and at least a month after that to get a reasonable posting, even if you referance your URL. Just the way the web is nowadays.

Thanks for the resources BG, Craig.
Craig: I edited the Modelers Wiki Page to contain current info. Placeholder text removed. Kinda plain at the moment.
BG: We have the web and email covered, take a visit to http://www.cccsns.spaces.live.com if you want to see what we have so far (not much)
Everything is still very much liquid and being stirred by a sizable propeller, so until things gel up a bit, we are in a sort of limbo. Hopefully we'll be more solid after the 25th. I'll update everything (and everyone) at that time. Thanks for all your interest!
Let us know if you'll be coming... or come even if you don't! :D

Remember.... THIS Sunday, Sunday, Someday, Central Coast Model Boat Club!!
Central Coast Model boat club goes out on our first trip, which brings me to some questions...
Shawn, Toes, everyone else coming, When do we want to meet out there and do we want to meet up there or at HHQ?
I know some of you havn't been to the lake before so it may be a little tricky finding it (Unless you want to be modern and use a gps, and i have no problem with that...). I want to get this recognised asap so there is no confusion on sunday. And anone know how many people to expect? 10? 20? 30?... 5?

After the phone call earlier with Shaun, it's been suggested about 9.30 - 10.00am at the lake... Is that ok with everyone else?
GPS?.. whats that?... there are things (still) called maps.. :p

9:30-10:00 AM sounds good, we'll meet up there directly at the lake. Anyone need any extra info on the location or other contacts?
I've got 3 boats to run and one is in the shop, plus the rest equals a lot of boats all at the same time(or on off throughout the day)
As for frequencies i have a 87FM, and two 27AM's. If anyone else (still) uses the 27Am channel and will be running let us know so we can solve this beforehand.

Shaun was the 'official' camera man as he had no boat.. :p so expect some pics coming from him..
There were 5 in attendance..

Mrs Toes
.. and myself..
The pool was very weedy and caused considerable problems for the TBW fleet.. Scoot, WW, ST 695 and Tigger all did some underwater weed clearance and had to be rescued by each other...
I did take Bournville Plain with me to try out its new prop and it seems to be much better than it was with the old prop.. Hopefully Shaun got some good pics (and a Video i think!) of the run's..
There was one 'fatality' of the day.. MarcRacer18's fast electric flipped in the middle of the lake and sank within moments before anyone could get to it.. I think Shaun has plans for a 'recovery' mission.. ;)

I know poeple want pictures but i wonder if Shoun knows? I had my camera out as well, didn't get as many pics as shoun did but i will upload them when i can(my computer doesn't want to cooperate).
I went out to the spot where my boat sank in a tin row boat and stuck an oar as far as i could under the surface. after about a foot all hopes for visibility are lost and the actual depth is uncertain(6-8 ft(guessing)). Next time i will add additinal floatation to the stock floatation. Although next time i will get a better hull and running gear as well...
If shaun can find a way to get the boat back then that will be something else. I do remember him mentioning a under water wireless camera from harbor frieght that might work...
BTW Toes, if i ever have as many working boats as you i'll  but very nice colection! :D

I'll post up the Pictures when I get home tonight. I didn't get the chance to last night.
The video is another matter. The darned camera shoots in Quicktime (Mov) format and I have to convert it to edit it. So the 'movie' bits will take a while to get produced. Off to find a converter...
As for the report, you've got the basics from Toes and MarcRacer...
The lake was very weedy. The Go-Fast boats had less of an issue with it than the deep draft and slower prop turning scale boats. Toes brought much of his magnificient collection and nearly every one of them got hosed up with weedage.
MarcRacer's father was such a sport, he'd hop in the barely holding air inflatable boat and go out and get the stranded RESCUE boats! This will be in the video as I have some video shot of it. It's not great quality (due to space constraints) but it's funny to watch. So, I'd add that to 6 people in attendance.
We were short many people we were expecting, so there is room to grow here.
MarcRacer's super modded go-fast boat just ripped, until it flipped, then sunk. It happened so fast after launch that I didn't even get the camera powered up to take a picture of it before it went under! It moved really quick but wasn't overly stable for the power applied! We'll have to go find a way to fish it out... :(
It was a fun outing and great to meet everyone. I'll have pictures up tonight.

Well, you warned me about that. Folks, just so you know, Corrigan is actually a VERY BRIGHT 'International Orange' (day glow version) color. I'm not sure there is a camera on the planet that can accurately photograph that color. I think you'd have to use a custom film with special processing to even get close.
I'll see if my old version of Photoshop will work on my new PC and try to get it somewhere in the neighborhood of the right color. It is not a bright orangey yellow, it is freakin' bright NEON ORANGE!

Very nice pics Shaun! I'd say that does it justic for now. The fast electric was a definate loss and with no pictures to post up on telephone poles i'll let it go to who ever finds it(50 years from now..., or sooner dependeing on how badly the city wants the spring for water...).
The weeds never bothered any of my boats so i never thought off mentioning it. I guess the lake just doesn't like the slow boats... :p
You now originaly (according to a tale from another boater) the lake was used for just fast nitros and highproformance gas boats. You now the racing stuff. I had a prob with the weeds not allowing me to get to the water at one time but that was it...

Hey guys,
I just wanted to say thanks to Marc for the speedy reply. My buddy Bob (drag boat bob) and I have been doing some research on where to play! Apparently there is a lake in Templeton that allows all walks of life to play there. FE, nitro, gas......whatever.
Bob and I have been running at Laguna Lake in SLO and Lopez Lake in Arroyo Grande. Laguna has a limit of electrics only, single motor up to 1 hp. However, Bob and I have made friends with a Ranger that frequents the park. Somehow, someway, he thinks my nitro Miss Elam and Bobs' Miss Vegas Deuce are electric...........and that Bobs' 50+ MPH UL-1 is less than 1 hp............whatever works.
Laguna is cool but the wind is too prevalent there and highly unpredictable. Lopez on the other hand is a little better. In fact, there is a section of Lopez Lake that does not permit (human size) motored boats to run in. The park ranger actually told us that would be the best place for us to run! There happens to be a sheltered cove there now that is semi-protected from the winds until about 12-1 pm. There is also a dock there that makes it easy to launch and retrieve our boats.:)
C'mon everyone, lets get together and shred it up! I am happy to see that there are more R/C guys here on the coast. I tried to set up a R/C truck/car club before but found that there weren't a lot of interested parties. :(
Lets do this!:D
