After watching the known and unknowns Sat. I was wondering what the scoring criteria was for the flights. I read the descriptions for the known maneuvers; however, I did not see how the unknown or the remaining part of the known was scored for airplane or helicopter. i.e. judging criteria, etc. As a former pattern pilot and judge, it would be nice to know, if for no other reason than to have a better understanding of how the flights are scored. I believe that would help in understanding the final rankings are achieved. As it is now, it's like it's some kind of mystery or something and you need a secret decoder ring to figure it out.

Congrats to the winners and all the participants. That was some truly outstanding flying.

I don't know how they were scored, but I was in agreement with the outcomes......


Did you think that someone else should have won? It seemed pretty accurate to me. Jason Knoll and Jaimie Roberts seemed to be clear favorites throughout the competition IMO.


*I'm not a judge, nor do I know a ton about flight competition, but this is my personal criteria*

Jason's flying seemed almost robotic. I his rolls seemed extremely sharp. It looked like NONE of his movements were reactive or corrections. When he would do a roll, the plane would roll and stop sharply at even increments. When he would fly patters, like a huge loop, it looked almost PERFECTLY round. In other words, if the sky was a canvas and he had a paint brush on his tail, there would be no "squigglies" or inconsistencies. He was very smooth and very sharp.

Also he seemed to use the whole flight area. He had maneauvers very high, very low, left, right, front to back, back to front.... He seemed like a surgeon, and flew very gracefully.

I actually thought that 2nd place would have been Gabriel Altuz. He seemed to really put on a show, especially Sunday. He was flying great. His flying seemed more raw and agressive. He and Jason had totally different flying styles. Jason was smooth and graceful and Gabriel was fast and aggressive. Those were the two plane pilots that really stood out to me.



As for the Helis, I don't see how anyone could think that Jaimie Robertson didn't win. That kid was ON FIRE. I can't imagine whate a better flight would even look like. He was extremely aggressive, he flew insanely low, he seemed to combo his maneauvers CONTINUOUSLY..... I was not sitting up on the flightline, and during his flights I was constantly standing up because he was flying so low he was behind the chairs in front of me! There were at least 5 times in each of his flights that I thought he was going to crash. You could hear the "oohs" and "ahhhs" throughout his flight. Bobby Watts was my #2 also, and that's what he actually placed. The other helicopter pilot that really caught my attention was Matt Botos. His flights were very entertaining as well. I would have put him at #3....

The scores look very close between some of these guys...

It was a great competition.

Gabriel Altuz should have been first. This comp. isnt particularly about precision and shouldnt be. Its not IMAC and shouldnt be judged as if. Thats why its a seperate "Xtreme Flight" championship, to allow for a seperate set of judging criteria. From what the competition is supposed to be about, Altuz should have taken the cake.

The helis are a different story, im not referring to the helis.

Precision is still a highly weighted portion of the judging critera for both airplanes and helis. Here's a screenshot of what the xfc wants to see from potential contestants.

All I'm going to say is the rule sheet as given to the pilots beforehand changed the unknown rules. I still have this sheet saved to.

Scoring will be based on difficulty, NOT choreography for the unknown flights.

That's all I'm saying...
