Wondering if a typical optical hobby tach (i.e. GlowBee: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&P=SM&I=LXPX81 ) could be easily modified to accept a magnetic input from the like of a Hall Effect sensor?
TIA,
Jim

Does a typical opto tach use a photo resistor or transistor?

I’m going to guess the later; can we condition the signal of a mag/hall effect sensor to look the same?

I would think that you could just drive an LED from your mag/hall effect sensor, and put that in front of the sensor on the tach. That way you don't have to modify the tach at all.
