I have this wild idea to build a 12' wingspan j3 cub from foam and would love any input on feasabilty of electric power :)

Go for it.Not a problem to build something like that.

Just finished my hangar 9 106" cub with a AXI 5345 motor. It will most likely be over
powered I hope. Will give it the maiden flight next week. If it is overpowered it could
be a possible motor for you.

Hobby Lobby flew a 12 ft Telemaster at SEFF with electric power. It is their new ARF of the Telemaster. So if you got the bucks, the skill and drive, I would go for it. I am sure it is quite doable.
I don't have the ability or drive to build anything that big. Besides I have no place I could work on anything that big. I am going to have a bit of a problem fixing my Senior Telemaster. Minor landing problem a week ago. going to take some time a patience to fix it.

Bigger is not always better. Some of my most amusing flights have been with smaller inexpensive flyers...FWIW.

But, I know what it's like to want to scratch an itch. ;)

I have a 13,5 kg 1/3 scale Piper Super Cub with a 3590 mm wingspan (11,8'). It's powered by a $70 chinese outrunner on 10S 12000 mah battery and a 23x10 prop (scale size). I get 40 minutes max duration and good power (2900 W max static power). This is a lot of power for a lighter Cub though. :)

The motor I use: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=7870&Product_Name=TGY_AerodriveXp_SK_Series_63-74_170Kv_/_3250W

My big cub has awesome presense in the air and sounds great.

Can we see some pictures of our members behemoth flyers?

Thanks for the positive feedback on my project. The reason I want to go big is for seeing and for electric I feel it is a little more reliable that gas. The reason for foam is cost and weight. Just need to find out prices/specs on motors/equipment that can pull somethig like that.

Powering a Cub of that size is a piece of cake. There are plenty of motors available.
If you consider the Hobby City motors, their ratings for power are probably 10 - 15% higher than actual so keep that in mind for spec'n out.
Lynxman's plane is powered at about 100 watts per pound and that is a good rule of thumb. Can always pull the throttle back! Can't always push it forward enough. :(
Another thought...Go for a speed controller that is larger than minimum and don't push the batteries to their max. This equals longer life and a happier pilot.

At SMALL this last weekend Mike Connolly (?) flew his 'giant' Spacewalker and Telemaster made from Depron. Wingspans of around 80". Motors were quite small (200W?) since the weights were less than 3lb. They could fly in quite a bit of wind and still stay within a 100ft circle.

I'd say go for it.
