View Full Version : Idea RC Groupie identification

Last year there was some talk about being able to identify forum members at events. I have an idea I'd like to toss out to the operators of RC groups in this regard. The company I work for does business with a company who makes hat pins and logos for application to other items. They do all the standard hat pins like flags and military pins, plus custom pins and embroidered patches. We have done business with them for a few decades and have always been satisfied with their work and prices. My thought is have a RC Groups hat pin done using the cartoon transmitter logo. We would all recognize it right away. You could sell them for profit, or to subsidize the website, or donate any profits to your favorite charity. I personally would have no problem with paying a reasonable price with the proceeds directed any of those ways.
The pin mfg company is Hoover Manufacturing of Peru Illinois. No, I don't work there and I have never even spoken to anybody who does. Just naming them as a company my boss would be comfortable recommending from our history with them. There are many source options so shopping around would be doing due diligence.

I'm surprized the owner of this site does not seem to have hats, shirts, pins, coffee cups, etc. with the RC Groups logo on it for sale... Perhaps they do?

You know, now that you mention it, I'm wondering how they have missed out on doing just that---. :o
Besides being an advertising boost, it would almost pay for itself---. ;)

Baseball caps are useful.
Keeps the sun off you face and bald head.
They can also be seen at a distance, especially if the website logo is obvious.

I'm heading up towards Arrowhead country over the weekend for a mini-vacation and am planning to stop at Edina's Parade of Boats on Sunday. It got me thinking about this topic as it seems to always come up around the Foss Cup & St. Louis. Forum members trying to connect at events. "Stinking badges" might be a quick and easy way.

Willem, the bunch had a little trouble connecting at last year's St. Louis event, but not all that much. Still, a small I.D. would've been nice---. :p
We seemed to gravitate toward each other by some invisible aura---. ;)
Of course, it didn't take much to spot Kmot---. :)

I don't think the "stinkin' badge" would cut it anyway. I wouldn't buy anything with that crosseyed Tx on it much less wear it. Take the Tx off and just have RCGroups and I'll buy one. Pedro

It was kind of enjoyable last year at St. Louis, meeting all of those RC Group guys in the flesh, putting a face to a name---. ;)
Then still more of them showed up at my booth in Toledo this year---. :)

I really like the idea of a small badge with our handle on it... like what Knot put up in comment 9.
If the site does some decals, that'd probably be cool as well... sorta like AutoWorld back in the 60s.

the idea of user id's for offline meet ups has been done by modelboat mayhem, and they have caps, I think RCG may have them too. what I have done however is done a name plate for Nord Icelandia.

If you really want one, just copy the art and take it so a trophy/badge/nameplate type of shop. They will make you one.
A simple badge like this one does not cost very much at all.

I looked thru all my pics from last years regatta, trying to find a good pic of the RC Groups badge I had made. No luck, I always had my back turned or something. This is the best I could find, the badge is the small blue fuzzy looking thing on my left chest pocket. :( I had a trophy co. make it. It had a magnet for attaching so you dont have to poke a hole in your shirt.

I would vote to use the RC Groups logo just like it is on a hat or shirt, be it a tee or golf shirt style. Maybe add a "RC Boat Modeler" underneath to signify which catagory I would be in.
If badges are made, then it would be easy to include our group user name along with our real name, that choice could be up to the purchaser.

Modelboatmayhem.co.uk did it by having badges with the mayhem logo on, and that worked, so if fellow RCG users want to spot eachother at an event, the best way would be to advertise using the terry the transmitter logo, as EVERYONE who uses rcgroups.com will be familiar with the logo, and as Jim T Graham uses it on his live shows where the site sponsors an event, such as SEFF fly in over in Atlanta or wherever its being held, the very fact that someone has a badge with the rcgroups logo + user name will make them stand out among the crowd, even if the badge is 2.5" x 1" or if you go he full hog and have it emblazened on your T-shirt.

norgale, "terry the transmitter" is the official name of the RCG logo, it is after all a face, his eyes are the stick gimbals, he's giving left aileron and right rudder, looks like he's trying a side-slip.
have a word with Jim T Graham about the idea of RCG merchandise, they may already do i, if they di, he as i think, site owner, will be able to tell you where the online shop is
