I buy it and sell it with my winches (http://theshope.net/) and our club (http://www.kssclub.org/) sure uses a lot of it.

I got one spool out of probably 50 with breaks in it and it broke about 6 times just trying to string the winch, first tension on the winch it broke one more time and it went into the trash.

I called my supplier and complained and they said I could not expect continues line unless I pay the premium price (about $10 more). I explained what happened and they shipped a new spool of line.

I like it because it comes in two pound spools and will rig a winch with one spool usually without knots – at least for a while.

I would guess our club has used 10-15 spools and have not seen a break in a brand new spool except the one spool which they made good. Brand new it has great stretch and is fairly abrasive resistant but we do mostly fly off grass. We do have line breaks but usually from the line wrapping round something causing the break or an over zealous pilot with a heavy foot. And on occasion we will see a line break during launch but that must be expected with the equipment and the planes we launch.

I will say this at lest about #36 – it seems to be in short supply; one vendor has a 4 week lead time the other I use only had 5 spools to ship with a 3 week lead time on the rest of the order.

There are two varieties of line, one is the regular braid and the other is a round braid. The round braid has tremendous stretch making for great launches but we had a real problem with it wanting to climb the sides of the drum no matter how the winch was positioned. I actually think this was because of the tapered drum sides and not the line.

There seems to be several manufactures other than Powers, Samson Dura Twine for one makes a regular braid and round braid has proven to be good but the vendor charges a little more.

This is only my nickels worth so take it for what it is…

I had posted earlier about the Samson Line. I got a bunch of it off of ebay. We restrung our 6 winches with it and only had 1 line break (Cody) right out of the chute. We used it for the F3J in the Rockies contest and only had 1 line break, and we think that was due to abraision on the turnaround. I am pretty pleased with it. It is $10/spool of 1100 feet. roscoeef was the seller and was good to deal with. He shipped quickly and when we discovered he miscounted the # of rolls he sent, he sent another out, no questions asked.

Not long ago many sailplane fliers were using braided nylon line from Memphis Net and Twine. They offer a range of line strength/weight to choose from.

We used them for many years. The last 4 years the quality has sucked. There were multiple pieces in on each roll requiring knots, and the line was breaking far more than it used to. We have used the line that Mark Mech at Aerofoam supplies for the last couple of years and it is pretty good. The only drwaback was that it was very stiff with little stretch so it seemed to jerk the plane out of your hand on launch. The Samson line we have just tried seems much more forgiving. We will see how it holds up for the season.

Jim...would that be Powers or Memphis?
Thanks,

I was referring to the Memphis line. I don;t have any experience with the other mentioned brand.

I recently restrung all 5 of our club winches with #30 braided twine from Memphis Net and Twine. Same line size and make as used at the NATS with great success last year. We have had two line breaks so far this year. Both from turnaround abrasion. We have no launch weenies at our club. They seem to have fixed the reported issues from a few years ago they had.

Mark,

Is this the twine?

If so, what length did you put on each winch? Thanks.

Thanks for the info Jim, I feel better about using something other than Memphis.

Thank the rest of you guys for chiming off topic.
