I am working on a ship, not named for now. It carries a Helicopter. I would like to know if looking from above downwards, what direction do the main blades turn on a Huey Helicopter as well in what direction do the rotor blades turn when looking at them infront of the tail ?

I am trying to get the right look as if it were starting up.

Thanks In Advance.

That would depend on what type helo you are talking about. Once you decide, a good overhead view of the main rotors would give you info you need.

I went into the basement and dug out an old 1/35 Huey I have. Looking down from above the main rotor turns CCW. I had replaced the tail rotor with a clear disk on the model because I had the main motorized so I had to look up the Huey in a Military aircraft encyclopedia. From the illustrations when you are looking at the left side of the aircraft the tail rotor also turns CCW.

You need to ask Charlie Eaton. He used to fly the real ones. Did so even when people were throwing lead at him...

I believe counterclockwise is the norm. You should be able to find some video on the net.

Most helicopters have a single, main rotor but require a separate rotor to overcome torque. This is accomplished through a variable pitch, antitorque rotor or tail rotor. This is the design that Igor Sikorsky settled on for his VS-300 helicopter and it has become the recognized convention for helicopter design, although designs do vary. When viewed from above, the main rotors of helicopter designs from Germany, United Kingdom and the United States are said to rotate counter-clockwise, all others are said to rotate clockwise. This can make it difficult when discussing aerodynamic effects on the main rotor between different designs, since the effects may manifest on opposite sides of each aircraft.

I believe that the counter clock wise rotation is correct for both the main and tail roters. They were on the Ch34D's I flew in and I believe for the Huey's also.

All American helicopters have counter clockwise rotation, they turn to the left. The tail rotor turns to the left when looking from the left side, that is it turns toward the nose. English rotors turn the wrong way, clockwise, but then they drive on the wong side of the road too. :D

funniest thing in the world, hit Scotland and listen to a Carolina redneck getting instruction from a rental car agent that right is right and left is wrong and the rest of the world is driving on the wrong side of the road. It was worth my share of the rental fees just to listen to that argument!

That reminds me of the woman who was watching a parade her son was in and loudly stated "Look, my son is the only one in step."
