Just found this forum and was browsing through it. Does no one just take a SPAD and electrify it? Or am I the only one?

the single biggest deterant to electic motors on the front is the softer shafts and/or greater chance of tearing up the motors in mid-airs  . The .15's in SSC that we use tend to take some real abuse and usually come out unscathed. I have JB welded my carb back on mine and it works great! If there were some whay to have a straight lead edge to cut steamers with keeping the motor in pusher config...then maybe.

My buddies and I have thought of a way of doing this somewhat with a Delta wing that i am sure would work on a standard plane..never tried it but i think it could work..

One way was to put double sided tape along the leading edge of the wing, if your using paper streamer it should be enough to rip it off if you had some good like duct tape or something like that thats super sticky ...

Or optionally stick something like two very short like 1/2 inch lengths of carbon rods at the tips of your wings facing forward, in theory if you hit their streamer it should go along the length of your wing and snag/tear off on the rod...and it shouldnt effect flight performance much if any.

Could you point me to plans for that Stinger plane? Im lookin for a new plane to build, tried a Tea Racer and it failed miserably...startin to not like pullers as much lol test flights involve a lot of broken props compared to pushers...

It's more or less a DPS (Das Plas-Stik). Plans are avail from Spad to the Bone. I modified it (slightly) and re-christened it The Stinger. I ended up doing away with the twin-tails because I could never get it to not flutter at high speeds. Overall, it's a pretty good flyer. It has some wobble in the yaw axis but not excessive. It's also as tough as nails. I've had three head-on collisions during combat and all three times the other plane has gone down whereas I just kept on truckin'. Haven't had any bent motor shafts and no damage to the A123's so far.

New forum...and timely! I just found out a buddy of a buddy's father builds Gremlin short kits....he gave my flying partner two of them and one ended up in my garage tonight. Had a heck of a time picturing WTH it was supposed to look like until I got online and did a seach. Well....mine is going to be electrified....we'll see how it does I guess!

Converted my 25FX powered homade Gremlin to electric using Himax HC 3516 and 4, A123 1100 ma batts. Buddy had one with an OS 25 FX but had trouble getting it to run right so not a fair contest. Gremlin is a good combat candidate. Turns very tight without rolling out. Probably 75 to 80 mph.

Anyone have a pic or link to the Gremlin?

Sting. Go a short ways down the list till you come to the Sicle. This is very much like the Gremlin and I wouldn't hesitate to build it in place of if you don't mind building your own.

Got mine about 3/4 done now....built an electric motor mount....wing is done and mounted to the drainpipe. Going to run a Turnigy 42-40B 900kv with a Turnigy 60A Plush speed control with on 4s (3200 or 3700). This combo pulled 670watts with a 13x6.5 and flew a 6.5 lb Hanger9 Cherokee conversion....hopefully it moves this little beast around!

Hmmm. I had some electrified SPAD's back in the bad old days (8 years ago), and they were NiCD/Brushed powered and very heavy and underpowered. Some A123's, some real estate signs, and some cheap brushless gear would make for a pretty nice combat plane. I may have to revisit the coroplast. I was using 2mm which is not as tough and much harder to get than 4mm, which is practically free around here. However, it was lighter and that was necessary to get a somewhat flyable plane.

Here's a link to the Sickle as a fuelie, it will have to be electrified:
