Thanks for the list Tom. I just watched the same movie and it was great. That's one movie where you can see some good closeup pics of the PT's in action. The film was made in 45 to show the year 41 so the boats are probably renumbered later models. They were really something to watch in action.
Big weekend for war movies and I ain't leavin' the house for nuttin'. Pete

I watched "Expendable" too, and I can't see it too many times. I have the book, have read it at least twice and find it makes me appreciate the movie even more. Each is good in its own genre.
I realize that it is a movie that was made about events in 1941 and -42, and released in 1945, so its absolute authenticity might be suspect by some, but I didn't see a single number on the bow of a PT hull in the whole movie. Small numbers on the pilot house sides and fronts, yes, but nary a one on a hull side near the bow. Is there a lesson for PT model builders here?

Good point Jeepers and your right as i don't remember seeing any bow numbers either. I never could figure out why the Navy would go to all the trouble of using camo paint on the boats and then put a nice big number on the bow for the enemy to shoot at. Maybe that was something developed by the media or the model makers.
OK. Movies all day today. Pete

Any submariners out there? I always wanted to know if the periscope could be used to see underwater? Pete

So far I've watched two sub-movies,boiled over my coffee warming it up,left the shirts in the dryer so now they are all wrinkled, and now the third sub-movie which is a Brit movie with them speaking their peculiar brand of English which I mostly don't understand. Jeeze! These movies are dangerous to your health me thinks. Pete

Hang in there, Pete. One more day of all-day war movies, and we can get back to some semblance of normal in our lives. I know what you mean about schedule disruption, though. People like us are eating and sleeping at odd times so that we won't miss a movie that we particularly want to see. And my wife asks, "How many times have you seen THAT one?" She has difficulty believing that there are some that I really haven't seen before.
And, Pete, I know that I don't have to remind you to fly your flag, especially tomorrow. No, don't fly it upside down, we're not quite to that point yet.
We're having intermittent rain, so it's not ideal flag-flying weather here. Maybe you're drier down your way.
Concerning the PT hull numbers, it seems that someone, maybe Patmat, said that the completed boats left their factory with hull numbers on them. But upon their arrival in the area of operations, they were very quickly painted over.

Yep, another good movie, Tom. Guy Gibson was killed later in the war on another mission. It was interesting to get brief glimpses of a young Robert Shaw in this 1955 movie. Some twenty years later, he would make an indelible impression on moviegoers in "Jaws" as captain of the Orca, on a different kind of mission, with a different outcome.

I noticed that too, and the credits confirmed it was the Great White hunter.
Here is some info on Operation Chastise:

That is a very comprehensive article. You wonder how large a "fleet" of Lancaster bombers the movie makers were able to assemble in 1955, some 10 years after the end of the war. Many scenes in the movie showed a vic of three aircraft at a time, and one shot of planes on the ground showed four aircraft; this was the scene with the most aircraft in the movie.
The sound of those Merlin engines was a neat feature of the film.

Fly your flags at half staff today until noon, then full staff. A prayer for the boys overseas won't hurt either. Pete
