Hi all,
I fly with buddies just for fun, Doing full contact combat. Well we got everything 100% reliable, Rarely do we have to do a expensive or time consuming repair. The only issue is when getting others involved is the cost of the Motors. Can anybody recommend a durable motor at a fair price.
Currently we use Megamotors 22/10/5 with 3s A123 batteries.
I was hoping to find a Motor at Hobbyking but did not find anything that I thought would be good.

What's your AUW on your wing? I know several in our group are using a Turnigy motor on their 48" wings.
I use a FC-2812 (http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5423) on my 48" extremewing (http://www.extremewing.com/wing/).
The airfoil on the extremewing doesn't produce a lot of drag like some of the other airfoils we use on the EPP combat wings. The motor does not produce unlimited vertical but it does fly it nicely for combat.

I like about 200+ watts of power.
3.2 MM shafts break/bend. that is why I selected the 5mm shaft Mega.
I am un sure if outrunners will loose a magnet on Prop strike.
The wing of choice right now is Wing Warrior, However that is flexable.

Most Chinese inrunners have poor steel shafts that are either not hard enough or brittle, both bad things for combat. The outrunners have the same issue but shafts are easy to replace.
I would get the mega 16-15-4 with combat shaft. The initial price is steep but will last you years! some folks are flying their megas that are 3-5 years old. They also retain their value better and are easy to resale.

The 16/15/4C is nice... I like the 22/10/5 better. But I was hopeing to find something in the 50ish dollar range. A inrunner with 5MM shaft.
I have a few Mega's for myself but when trying to motivate a freind to jion in the fun... the 100+ for the motor scares them away.

PS. I have 1 16/15/4C and 2 22/10/5. one of which has had probably 300 mid airs and has never failed me yet :)
I broke 2 mega's and one aveox with 3.2 MM shafts before switching to the 5mm shaft

I think the 30mm Scorpions may be ideal, bout $50-60 and 5mm shafts.
The JGF are tough and rugged as heck. The 550T is one choice, the 500T is another.

I was hoping to find a Motor at Hobbyking but did not find anything that I thought would be good.I've been using this <$20 motor on my 48-inch combat wing for about a year. Plenty of thrust for quick acceleration and even vertical takeoffs with a fresh 2250 pack (a 9x6 APC prop). I liked it so well that I recently bought a second one for another wing.

One of my flying buddies recommends the higher KV version of that motor with a 7-inch prop:

Hmm the JGF looks nice, I could not find a weight on that 550T motor.
Had any problems with the Magnets?
The 2808 Hobbycity are the right price. I would like to hear about what you buddies setup is and what he thinks of it. I own a 1700KV motor that you linked and I bought it with the purpose of trying it on the wing. But have not been that excited about it, so I have yet to try it.

I fly my 48" combat wing with the TR 35-30A 1700kv Brushless Outrunner (Eq AXi 2808) linked above. I use HC's APC 7x6e look alike prop and fly with two 1050 to 1300 3s packs in parallel. It's got plenty of speed (80-90mph) and unlimited vertical, but still slows down nicely for our usual low and slow combat. I'd like to find a motor in that kv range that maybe put out just bit less power and weighed less. It would make balancing the plane a lot easier.
Here's a link to my description of this particular plane:

I too am using the same motor....Great power. However if you can find a lighter motor with the same power, can you post it on here after you test it and give us a nice review?

Well I had a old E-Slayer that I never got to fly well so I thought I would use it as a test platform for the 1700KV version, which I already had.
1st up was 7 x 4 MAS with 3s A123's and a cheapo receiver.
It flew ok, Needed about 3/4 throttle to be fun. but under powered for my desire.
Only pulled 15+ amps WOT
2nd test
Same everythign except a 8 x 5 prop. Watt meter showed 30 Amps now, Double the 7 x 4 prop !!!
Flight went very bad, Glitching to all heck lead to a few crashes, ESC was very hot etc etc... (I had a cheap parkflier Receiver and a super cheap ESC)
3rd test
a 7 x 5 APC prop, and put a better receiver in it (Corona). now it measured 20+ amps WOT. Plane flew nice on that. Good climb with OK speed.
All flights resulted in a nice cool motor. Although I have to say, for flight power and not going crazy on the amps I think the 7 x 5E APC prop is the way to go.
Summary.
I still like the Mega the best, but as a get em hooked setup that is cheap, I think that it will work.
Here is the vid I made with the 7x4 prop, Keep in mind the 7x5e did much much better on climb, almost twice as fast.
