battery hookup

I am planning to build a boat with parts. I plan to put in two 7.2V
motors, and I wanted to know if I should put in two motors in the boat
(hooked up to double power) or if I only need one?

You could get away with one motor. Check to see how much voltage your
motor can take as you might be able to hook two 7.2 batteries in series
and feed 14.4volts which will make it go faster. But if your motor
can't handle the volts you may burn it out.

Would it work to hook up the motors and battery(s) in any fashion that
would allow me to use two motors (the motors' max V is 8.4). Also do I
need to buy speed controllers and do they come separately from the
radio?

A speed controller is the best bet. But you can rig up a servo that
activates a switch that puts power from your battery to your motor. The
downside is, you only have two speeds - flat out and stopped.

With a speed controller you can go slow or fast and some even have
reverse.

So if i hook a speed controller to each motor, I could use two batteries
toput out 14.4V (if the spped controllers can take that V)?
