I've been searching around for components to add to the list for things to get for the Extreme Flight 88" Yak 54. I priced out everything that's top of the line (Hacker, Castle, Thunder Power, JR, ect. ect.) which came out to around $3600 (yes, I like to round up :) )- obviously I won't be getting this soon ;)

What I am asking is what would less pricey components be, without skimping out on quality? I'm not wanting to skimp out with something this big.

Obviously, with something this big, and expensive, it will be a while untill I can fund such a project. There's just a few complications in the way (like the fact that I don't have a job  )... I need to build a workbench as well :)

I'm in the same sitiation as you, but I just went back to work.

I want to build a EF 88" yak too. I'm going to try a Great Planes Rimfire "65cc" motor. There isn't much info out on it now, but the price looks pretty good and towerhobbies always gives very good deals(20-25% off for people in Canada). My dad and I have about 15 rimfire motors so far and we havent had a problem yet. Other then bearings on a motor that was flown into the ground.

I don't think there is any point to buy any ESC other then a Castle Creations.

For batterys I'm going to try Hyperion packs. There $190 for a 6s 5000 25c pack. My dad and I have been reading up on them and they seem to be very good packs. Also I'm scared to buy any of the new Flight Power packs, it seems they had a bad batch and the packs only lasted 30 cycles. Up until now Flight Power has been our first choice of batts.

I'm not going to skimp at all on servos, I'm useing Futaba S9157 servos. There $139 each and have 425 oz-in of torque.

My 2 cents.

Yeah, that's definately a lot cheaper on the packs than 5000 mah 6 cell TP Extreme V2's. The Rimfire 65CC OTOH isn't enough watts for what I'm wanting. I'm wanting hovers with explosive power to easily climb out, which means I'm going to need around 3000 watts of power.

I did happen to find this however: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXXJW5&P=7

Should be out by the time I have the funding for this. Plus, it's $350 cheaper than a hacker.

I'm not sure where your brain was when you posted this (I'm just kidding, don't get mad). But the 65cc motor is bigger then the 50cc motor.

For my yak I am shooting for 4000 watts.

Xpress: For my first try @ 30% electrics I wanted to try & outfit a Yak with as little expense as possible & not have a gold mine invested in it. I am a big believer in name brand products but at the same time If i can get the same performance for less why not. Here's the Equipment I installed in my Yak

Hyperion Z-54045-18 (50CC Equiv.) $192.00 (3200 Watt max)
Turnigy 100 Amp ESC $100.00
5 Tower Hobby TS-150 Servos(Futaba) @ $37.00 Each. (193 0zs torque @ 6 volts)
2 6S 5000 Mah Zippy Lipos's $105.00 Each for 12S in series
CC Voltage Reg. $25.00
Approximately $800.00 in equipment. Ive Been flying it since last September & haven't had any problems with my setup. I am not a heavy 3D guy but I does anything I throw at it.

Good Luck: Joe

Hey, what's the vertical power like with that motor/ESC/battery combo? I'm a believer in having a gratuitus ammount of power, no matter the size ;)

Xpress, I like your thinking, these fly just like the DWs! And EF is creme de la creme.

I just finished an electric EF Extra 88" which is a very similar model.

I am using $78 6S packs from Hobby City in my 88" EF Extra. I also have the $100 Sentilon ESC. I have the Hacker A60-16L which was $250 from Esprit and a hacker mount is worth it at $30.

Five flights and so far so good.

Also, APC 25x12E prop is around $25, and you need a charger for 6s.

For servos I used the Hitec 7955s but I wish I had used these:

$30! http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/HD-DS120MHV.html

If you are using a good jr/spektrum rx you can just run these with a 2s Lipo with no regulator, nice cheap simple setup.

Seems like Electric 88" models get cheaper and cheaper every day.

I priced out two flight packs because you got to have two.

Not bad!

Joe, how many flights have you got on yours, any troubles at all?
How is that Hyperion? I almost bought that one, it has nearly the exact specs as the Hacker.

Did you program the ESC? I just wired mine up and ran!

FlopGun: Ive Logged 14 flights so far with no problems, I did program the ESC for advanced timing & am getting approximately 8 minutes of flying. I am satisfied with the performance of the Z5045-18 so I purchased 2 more motors for my 30% Yak-55 & 30% Sukhoi. www.allerc.com has the Z5045-18 on sale.

Cheers: Joe :)

Im just about to "reconvert" a plane this size, Extra 260L. I have been flying with a 10s EVO20 batts, actro 60 motor, Jeti Advance 90. Now i will update the powerline to a Pletti Xtra 30 EVO, SPIN 99 or 200, and 10s FP EON-X30 5000 i think, start out with a Mejzlik E 22x12".

I won't buy spektrum, I'll be running Hitec, so I'll need a regulator. Also, i'll be on QPCM, so I'm getting a QPCM Hitec reciever which I believe can handle 2s lipo.

Also, what's the power like with the A60? I'm kinda power hungry, so I like VERTICAL power :)

Here's my 87" Extra with an A60-18L/Spin 99/12s 5000mah/Xoar 25 x 12/17.5lbs AUW=3700watts. Would suggest adding bracing to avoid this:

Oh, so if I keep one under 18lbs, the A60-18L will be plenty then. From my math, 3700 watts on 18lbs is about 200 watts per pound! :)

Nice flying there too edfrules. Also, what are the golden colored pieces? Steel or aluminum?

Oh, and anyone down here (or local) in San Diego have a EF Yak54 88" (or at least similar) I can give a spin? Yeah, I know it's not easy to trust your baby to someone else..

Even @ 18lbs it should be more than OK. Chris H.'s 88" Extra took a detour thru the woods during the noon time demo-OUCH! Not much was left-bummer. Too bad nice plane...
That's my buddy Blake Hilson(Hilson87)on the sticks, I'm the hombre on the left. Fred Midgett shot the last flight @ SEFF if you have a subscription to HPP.
http://flightpass.higherplaneproductions.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=30581
Aluminum angle brackets-less than 1oz was added with that fix. If Blake electrifies his 89" Slick(DA-50 now) I'll have to do the same thing or suffer the same consequences  That boy is hard on equipment, not that he's purposely trying to kill it but he's just a hard flyer by nature, so planes flown by him need a little more attention to detail. Good luck with your build-50cc electric conversions are sweet!

Hey Guys I tried to order an A60 18L from Espree and they were out how would an A60 16L perform? It looks like the specs are very similar. Your help would be appreciated. I am have an Extreme Flight Extra 300 88" and plan on using 12s 5000 set up.

I'm looking for a replacement motor for my 78" Extra. At the moment it has a Turnigy SK 63-64 270kv but it has failed on me and I dead-sticked this morning.

I'm running a 20x12 on 10s currently. I'm having a hard time finding something that will do the trick on 10s, as I can't go much bigger on my prop due to clearance issues, so the A60 Hackers might be a tad low in kv for what I need.

It was getting around pretty decently on the setup, but I don't want to risk another dead-stick, as I've got to rebuild the end of the wing that got damaged. I'm not a fan of repairing, I'd rather not crash, lol! :D

I forgot, 8 min flight with 10 to 30% left in the batteries

But, 1 Z5045-18B allready failed once (front bearing, it seem to be very difficult to change bearing on this motor from what hyperion told me) and the second is loosing oil onto the cowl

Well, a neighbor that wants to learn how to fly (well he knows how to fly, just needs to get down the landing part) and he's got a bunch of planes, including a great planes 25% yak 54, currently has a DA50 on the nose. Said I can fly it whenever I would like to :D:D

However I've been looking up power systems, and was wondering how I could achieve a 10S 10,000 mah pack. Can I hook up 2, 5s 5000mah packs in a 5s2p configuration? Or..?

Magne
Jun 30, 2009, 04:08 AM
Two 5s 5000 mah packs ("A") in series make a 10s 5000 mah pack. ("B")
Run two of these ("B") in parallel for a 10s 10000 mah set-up.

Magne

Xpress..

Ahh, so I want to run them in parallel :)

Jul 01, 2009, 04:07 AM
You'll need four 5S 5000mah packs or two 10S 5000mah packs to get 10S 10000mah.
Two sets 5S 5000 packs will be in series (10S 5000mah), then connect the two sets in parallel. If you got the 10S 5000 packs, all you need to do is run them in parallel.

Xpress..
Jul 01, 2009, 02:15 PM
Hmm, then I suppose 2 TP 10s 6000 packs would have to do

drksyd
Jul 01, 2009, 02:36 PM
That is simpler but you need a (or 2) 10S chargers.
