Has anybody looked into Liability insurance for your UAV? I can only find one company in the USA that will do so. Anybody have any resources? This is what I have found.

I was just reading their site last night. You should go to their site and read their statement posted under "News and Announcements". They are basically saying that they "might" insure you, but they do not covery any fines or legal fees if the feds catch you breaking the law.

I saw that. No worries there, the reason for the insurance is to fulfill part of the COA process.

In the field our saying is : "Two is one and one is NONE!"

airmcn_3 - what part of the COA process requires insurance? When I got my COA they didn't even mention it.

Gene,

After much research I have found out you can’t even get insurance, this is due to there being no commercial certification in the USA, I was basing my statement off what we experienced when getting our COA in Australia, Insurance is a requirement before you can even apply there. It’s unfortunate that we can’t get a commercial COA here.

Ah.... gotcha! The "unfortunate" part is indeed an understatement!

Clearly commerical COA's in the US are solely in the hands of the defense contractors and it's benefactors.... might as well throw in noncommercial uses as well as it pertains to the NAS. :p

Notice the use of the word "agencies":

One of the greatest challenges to responder agencies in the use of UAV systems is obtaining the appropriate certification to fly the UAV. For public agency operation, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issues a Certificate of Authorization (COA) to federal, state, and local government agencies that operate UAV systems. The FAA works with its applicants to develop conditions and limitations for UAV operations to ensure that they do not jeopardize the safety of other aviation operations. A COA permits agencies to operate a particular UAV, for a particular purpose, in a particular area. A COA is usually valid for one year. Usually, the FAA will provide a formal response within 60 days from the time a completed application is submitted. COAs often contain additional restrictions, such as limiting flight time to daylight hours, prohibiting flight near heavily populated areas, and/or requiring that the aircraft be observed, either by someone in a manned aircraft or a ground observer who can keep visual contact with the airborne UAV at all times.

Emphasis on the "usually" now...... We have assisted another county in their application and have not gotten a response in several months now. We have made some minor changes to our standing COA (at their request) and they have not responded since January.

There is a rumor floating about that they will NOT issue any COAs this year, new or otherwise. And we know what a FOIA request will get you!

Gene I dont think thats a rumor, I was told this as well from a individual that is rather tuned in with the FAA.

Makes me kind of glad we are based in Australia although it’s the same type of situation over there right now.

We caught them with their pants down.......... I think they underestimated us :D

Yeah.... bummer huh?

I've been all over the world and don't want to go back to any of the places I've been, but I've always wanted to go to Oz. Lucky you!

it really is. You defiantly need to make it out there sometime, it’s a great place to visit and play.

The COA in OZ is almost the same as here. I just want to get an EAC so we can continue development here in the States. Most of our development is done here due to resources.
