View Full Version : Build Log 3DHS 126" AJ Slick - Beta version - Electrified (Videos added)
Captain Norway
May 07, 2009, 07:01 PM
This will be my first build thread, and I think I have a very nice project for my first one.
The 3D Hobby Shop 126" Andrew Jesky Slick was shown recently at the Toledo show for the first time, and I have gotten my hands on a pre-producion beta version of the plane.
The color scheeme is one of my own choice, and not a production scheeme. I have "commisioned" an "artwork" from ADC Vinyl to complement the scheeme. It involves checkers in white and carbon, but other that that I leave it up to Rob at ADC to cook up something cool...
It is designed for 170 - 200cc gas, but mine will be electric.
The inspiration for the power system comes from watching the videos of Bernd Beschorners Delro Raven on Flight Pass and from Jockes buildthread of his 42% Extra.
I have decided to go with less battery capasity than what Bernd uses, since I will not fly the Unlimited sequence any time soon... Instead, I will go with high discharge batteries for maximum retained voltage. I hope to exceed DA-200 performance.
Equipment:
Plettenberg Predator 37/6
RASA 3-blade 28.5x12
Jeti Spin 300
6 x Hyperion G3 VX 7s 4200 35C
2 x Hyperion G3 CX 2s 2500 25C
13 x Hitec HS-7955TG
SWB Servo horns
Bulk 20awg wire and Futaba connectors for extentions
Futaba R6014FS / 14MZ
Smart-fly Power Expander Competition 12
Charging setup:
6 x Hyperion EOS 0720iNET
The motor will be running on 14s 12.6Ah for the first test. Prop data from Plettenberg shows that the motor will turn the 28.5x12 prop at 6300 RPM with 47 volts input and pull 308A. With the Hyperion G3 batteries, I hope to get at least 50V, aprox. 6700 RPM and 16kW+ with this setup.
The motor will mount inside the spinner for optimal cooling, and the 3 blade folding props mount directly to the motor.
I will run 2s LiPo unregulated to the servos, and the PE Comp 12 will provide regulated 5V to the RX. Servo setup is 3 per ailron, 2 per elevator and 3 on the rudder.
Erling

Today I got the plane transported to where it will be built. I assembled the wings, elevators and rudder to check the fit. Everythink fits perfectly and very tight.
To be honest, this is an assembly thread, not a build thread. Almost everything comes finished from the factory. Ailerons and elevators come pre hinged and sealed. The rudder hinges are mounted and removable. You just slide some piano wire from above to attach it. :)
The biggest issue for me is to get a motormount made to fit the motor in front of the cowl, but I have a friend that is more than up to the task.
I was very happy to see that the CF spinner fits perfectly with the cowl. It is almost like it was made for this combination.
The shot of my friend "inside" the canopy was inspired by some shots on Snappasaurus thread on the 60% BH Extra. It looks very cool, and his head would actually fit inside.
Tomorrow I will start with putting servos in the elevators and do my first attempts on getting two servos to work together....

Thanks guys.
I am really excited about getting this thing done. Not sure if I can sleep tonight... I will receive all the servo viring tomorrow, and I will go ahead with servo mounting.
Next step is to mount the lower part of the cowl and take measurements for a motor-mount.
I was considdering doing 15s on this one, but then I realized that the 14s setup that Plettenberg used only retained 3.36V per cell and gave 6300 RPM.
Initial reports on the Hyperion G3 35C batteries shows that I should get at least 3.5V, so that should give me 6700 RPM wich will put me on par with the DA-200.
I am concerned that the prop I have chosen will not give me the 3D performance I could get with a 32x12 2-blade prop, but time will tell. When looking at the front, the 28.5" prop barely clears the cowl. :D
NumbSkull
May 07, 2009, 08:12 PM
Is the 28.5 a 3 blade prop?
Edit..
I reread the post, and see that the plety has a 3 blade mount on it.
Can you change the back plate so that it can run a two blade?

Why not go with 32x12. That will be ballistic for sure.
The thing is that the motor is set up for 3 blade mount. I am not sure that I can get the option for 2 blade in the spinner mount config.
There are three reasons for using this: Getting as much weight forward as possible, better cooling, and it is super awsome... :)
If someone could make me a 400A ESC, I would go 3 blade 32x12... ;)

I will get a picture of my charging setup when I get the next shipment from Hyperion.
I have a setup with 3 x 28V 600W powersupplies, and I will run 6 x Hyperion 0720 chargers on them. I can then charge the pack for this bird in less than 30 minutes. (Now, if someone can make me a 600W charger, I can do this in 12 minutes... :D )

I would rather not add the numbers, but the power system is:
Predator 37 - 755 euro
Spin 300 - 423 euro
1 set Batteries - 1027 euro
= 2205 euro = 2948 USD
This makes it more or less the same as a DA-200 setup with one set of batteries. (Not counting chargers... )

So, one elevator half assembled.
I set up for 50 deg travel on the elevator. Managed to get the geometry almost perfect between the two servos. I am able to run them with a 1 ms deadband without the servos fighting eachother at any point.
I used a servo protractor to find the best geometry where both servos use the same number of degrees for the same travel. I then programmed center and endpoints using the programmer on one servo. I then used a second programmer to program the second servo at the same spots.
As you can see, I use most of the travel on the servo for maximum torque. I tried to bend the elevator in all positions, and even on 4.8V, it will not budge. I always abuse them as much as I can prior to installing ever since I had a bad glue joint on my 85" Yak and one of the horns came off off in flight.
I used locktite on all threads, and also sealed with meduim CA for extra safety.
I could have gotten more travel, but it would require me to cut a recess in the stab for the horn to dip into. I think 50 deg should be enough...
I will test the speed on 2s Lipo tomorrow.

Wow, I didn't realize that the motor / spinner are a matched assembly. How does that work? Looks like its a geared system. Is that correct?
No gears. It is simply an outrunner where the prop blades mount on the motor housing. The spinner goes over the whole thing.
Take a look at Flight Pass from TAS 2007, Friday. There is an interview with Bernd Beschorner where he explains the setup. Mine will be exactly the same. When I saw that last year, I decided i MUST have one of those, and now I have one. I also have the smaller Predator 30 to go in a ballistic 10kW setup on the 103" SC.
http://flightpass.higherplaneproductions.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=2285
I will probably push this thing all the way to 17kW, but I really do not know yet what performance I will get. Bernds uses the older generation FlightPower batteries, and he only gets 3.35V at 308 amps with 6300 RPM. I hope to get at least 3.5 and 6700 RPM with the Hyperion G3 batteries.
Hopefully the Spin 300 will handle 350 amps. Jocke, www.wattsup.se, pulls 330A on the same combo with the new Flightpower batteries.

Cool setup. Very different. What is the purpose of have the prop blades move forward or backward? Is this an adjustment or does the prop move f & b during flight? Do they have something in this size in a two bladed setup?
Captain Norway

Cool setup. Very different. What is the purpose of have the prop blades move forward or backward? Is this an adjustment or does the prop move f & b during flight?
According to "ze germans", this in benificial in some way. I really do not know how or why. It is cool, and that is all I need to know. :) I would guess that the blades can move slightly and reduce stress in very hard pitch/yaw changes. Guessing here...
If you look at some thread from the most crazy germans, they use folding props even on 47" 3D palnes, and they mount the motor in the cowl for weightsaving and take out the motorbox. I never really got that much into the weight saving thing.
My main reason for choosing this setup was that it is the most powerfull motor availlable, and 700 grams lighter than the nearest competitor. The reason I went with the spinner mount is to get as much weight as possible forward to help with CG. I am hoping to get my batteries in an acsessible place in the fuse.
Captain Norway
May 08, 2009, 10:28 PM

The Predator 30 that I will be using in the 103" SC is has the same setup with 2 blades. This is a 11 kW motor, but it has been used in 13 kW setups. One of these in a made for electric light 42% plane would be awsome.

I have seen it, yes. MASSIVE. It is sure to be the only thing to survive if you do the lawn dart trick at WOT. :D
I showed it to a friend and pointed out the airfoil on it. He asked "Why?". I said "Because it is cool..."
I will probably not fit the wheelpants for the maiden. I am not overly confident that the strip is long enough for my fist landing, so I might end up in the rough. I felt the same way when maidening the 87" SHP, and I proved myself right. Once I get a feel for the stall speed and glide I should have no problem.

So, rudder is done.
The rudder is removable and this is done in seconds. Very nice setup that might come in handy. Not excactly sure how I am goint to transport the beast yet, so we will see.
I have 3 servos set up in a pull-pull config. Setup is done quite easily with two Hitec programmers. I am going to try using just the 14MZ for setting up the aileron servos just to give it a try.
There is also an option to mount the rudder servos directly in the rear, but I chose pull-pull for CG purposes. I will try to keep as much weight forward as possible so I can get my battery packs as far back as I can for easy installation.
Before anyone comment, I am using washers above the ball-links on the elevator and ailerons. I just did not see the need in the rudder setup were there is no bending of the link. If one servo decides to go in the wrong direction, I would rather have the ball pop out.
I can not get over the power and speed I get with 2s LiPo on the 7955 servos. I think rolling harriers are going to be a lot easier to time, but also mistakes will show very easily. The diffrence between 2s LiPo and 2s A123 is significant.
Next will be the ailerons...
The most time consuming thing in this build is using multiple servos. I do however think it is faster to set up the multiple servos on a surface than it was to hinge one surface on the 87 SHP. ;)

Maybe I need to talk to Ben about getting a plane in John Deere colours just to make him jealous... :)

Can you show the bottom of the removable rudder setup?
I would like to see how it is secured.
thanks
David
Me too. I have not looked into that yet. I will post pictures when I get to it.

:D what me jealous? okay maybe a little, better ask for two if you do that :)
almost harvestig time now so if your up for landing in the fields there should not a problem with the size of the air strip for the first few trips.

Yes, there has been talk about makaking a flying field at his farm. That would be pretty cool.
Right now we fly the bigger planes at another farm, but it would be nice to have it close to a shop with electricity and space for storing the planes assembled.
Speaking of assembly, I am now in the middle of doing the ailerons.
Turned out to be easy to get the geometry right for the 3 servos. I will take pictures tomorrow when it is done. Looks like I am getting 50 deg on the ailerons as well.
Had a friend by to take measurements for a motormount, and he will have it manufactured in the next couple of days.
Now I just need to get my batteries. They will be shipped from Hyperion this week, so I hope to have them by the weekend.

Yes, his help with the motormount will be much needed. I could never do it myself.
I am learning as I go along with this build. Same as building a 47", once you are done with a step, you realize it could av been done better or in a different way.

Hi Erling,
according to the Hitec specs (see link (http://www.hitecrcd.com/product_file/file/155/HS-7955TG_Spec_sheet_Final_080215.pdf)) the HS-7955TG can only be used up to 6 volts. How comes that you are connecting them directly to a 2s lipo without any problems?

Lots of people have been doing that for a number of years now without issues.

Like Josh said, people have been doing it for some time. Hitec personell has also given the ok for this on various threads on FG.
The important thing to remember here, is that I do not think the RX can handle 2s LiPo, and that is handled by the Smart Fly Power Expander. It provides regulated 5V to the RX, and direct power to the servos.
Once again, the specs for the Power Expander is maximum 2s A123, but I got confirmation from Smart Fly that it will handle 2s LiPo as well.
I like to get as much as possible out of what is availlable. It has always annoyed me that there are no ESCs with built in 6V BEC for the 47 - 55" planes. I have now ordered a Hyperion ESC that will give 6V to use in my Velox for more speed and torque on my HS-5065MG servos.

Well, had you gone Spektrum, then you can run all the way up to 9V :D.

Yeah, but I wouldn't have my cool colour touch screen and throttle activated timer... ;)

futaba?

futaba?
Yep. The 14MZ. I have tried most of the 2.4 TXs that Futaba have, and I really like the ease of setup on this one. It also have more functionality than I will ever use, and that is a good thing. (The sensible place to settle would be the 10C)
If I could make a wishlist to add to Futaba, I would like to have modelmatch from Spectrum and the telemetry from Hitec/Jeti. Oh, and a beefed up true 14ch RX that can handle 2s LiPo.... ;)

So, both wings are done. I just need to find the minumum deflection and program the servos.
I included one picture of what I did to get the geometry right for the ailreon horns. I started out with the bottom hole on the inner servo and the next hole on the outher servo. The middle one needed a hole inbetween for correct distance form hingeline, so I just grinded down 3 mm on the seating to match it.
Next after programming the wing servos will be to get some extentions made for the elevator servos and ailrons servos inside the fuse.
After that I will probably mount the wheels and other minor thing while I wait for my motormount and batteries.

Included a picture on the planned ESC location.
I plan to seal off any other holes into the fuse so that all air have to pass the ESC going in. I will then make an exit hole for the air near the batteries and seal off behind it as well. I will then get a "focused" path for colling air to pass over the main components.
The main thing still to be seen is how I will get my CG. Using the pull-pull rudder should set me up for a correct CG with a DA170. The DA weighs 3.5 kg. I have 2 kg motor in fron of the cowl to compensate. I hope this allows me to put the 4.7 kg of batteries pretty far back towards the wingtube.
Hopefully I can finetune CG with the RX batteries.

After talking to Ben at 3D Hobby's about the voltage rating of the HS-7955TG he stated he has been running them on Lipo's with no issue on his Slick.
I called Hitec to get further conformation and asked them about the HS-7955TG and they stated the servos can be run off a 2s Lipo pack and will handle the voltage.
I have 5 of them connected to the AR9100 DSM2 9-Channel PowerSafe Receiver (No Switch being used ) on a 2s 5000 mah Outrage Lipo running fine and they are Fast and strong.
