How do you digitize the scent of pot? Very interesting.

Good targets for a chopper sensing rocket. Rotor blades. Chop them like
Wolverine did (latest movie). :D

The technology is there...

I still questions how close in proximity you need to get to the subject matter for valid detection... plus how do you overcome the scent of burnt fuel... ?

What a perverted use of such leading edge technology. Maybe they can come up with one to identify the odor of corrupt politicians and dirty cops!

It might crash into some hippie with a 215 RX. (Prescription for medical marijuana)
It could be quite a lawsuit!

You don't need sniffers to find pot. The leaves have a distinctive reflectance that a good camera can detect and software can highlight. Take the pictures and it is like a human showing up on night vision scope. So an electric glider flying at a decent altitude can detect small clusters of plants with great reliability.
Now using Atto and its' log of flight and pictures you can fly over and know where to harvest someone else's crop. In fact regular sweeps can probably tell you when it is just about right for harvest. Now if you can also detect the booby traps that might be there, you could be safe, and quietly have someone else doing the growing. Just be there at harvest time.
Possible way to increase the funds for models ;-))

Hmm thats interesting.
I was up near Eureka in NorCal last summer and was up in the hills and saw what I can only describe as a UFO, no green men but it was an object that was flying and I couldnt easily identify it.
The only thing I thought it might possibly be was one of the circular UAVs but couldnt think of a reason one of those woudl be flying around the Mountains and forests of Norcal.
Now I know!
It kind of looked a little like this

or this But White

or this

or even this

It was flying at about 40-50 feet in a controlled manner. It was hovering when I first saw it but once I spotted it it moved off in a controlled manner but in kind of bursts. It must have had a camera or something on it as it disappeared out of my visual range.

The plants are inside houses/barns.
No way of seeing it from the sky.Only way to detect is heatseeking camera for the warm roofs or detection of small pot particles in the air.

I'm sure that the smart pot heads felt personally attacked by your comment. I know I did. :)
The people that use UAV technology for sniffing out pot seem to be dumber than any pot head I know. The pot heads I know run banks, film production companies, graphic art studios, law firms, furniture companies, CNC Shops, etc.. Most are very productive members of society, many are millionaires.

Hey now stop it chaps.
I'm regretting posting that link.
We are all passing through and have a limited time so its a good plan to try and get along with those sharing our time.
I know I know, I'm just as guilty of ranting at times.
Lets try and steer it back onto topic.
Would an RC heli with perhaps 20 minutes fuel really be a useful tool??

Ya I could see it being useful, mostly when they already have a good idea where it is and it’s too bushy to get too, these growers have trails but most times they are bobby trapped. They could use the heli to go over the trees and bush and locate, then it’s just a simple full scale heli drop to clear the area.....

Sorry Gary.
To get back on topic, I would like to know how they are "sniffing" the drugs. We use gas analyzers in the medical field, but I've not seen anything light enough to be carried in this size aircraft. Perhaps portable medical gas analyzers are just around the corner. That would be nice!

The intelligent do not deploy $50,000 robots to make sure people are not smoking a joint as they stand in the bread lines.
In the CIA for example, the best get out. Sure they recruit the most "honest, patriotic, hardworking Americans" but once these recruits find out that lying, deceiving and subversion are standard expectations of their job, the best get out.
D.W. If your cop friends are so smart, why are they armed tax collectors for a living?

There are MILLIONS of pot smokers in California. Why must I out my friends just to make your Texas cop friends happy?

Gary,
We were approached about this in Australia; they seem to be wanting 3-4hr flight times and the ability to fly at treetop levels. They also mentioned the need to be able to carry a 4kg IR camera. I am told that currently when the AU air force is out on training missions it will sometimes have the camera on and collect pictures/data to study later. My understanding is they have found a few plantations this way. Way I see it, its a good way to put our tax dollars to dual use.

I just read some info regarding this so called Canna-Chopper.
It's used to sniff the air coming out of chimneys and airvent exits of suspected buildings.
The helicopter can stay for 8 hours (!) in the air without topping up the fueltank.

8hrs for a chopper....... Sonds like they have something rather interesting there.
This will be an interesting topic to follow.

One does not have to be black to support civil rights or gay to support gay rights. The prohibition of marijuana for medical use is not founded in science or common sense and it causes people who do not wish to investigate the subject to bury their heads in the sand (like the former Bush admin.).
It is a shame that this subject divides us and causes individuals to call others “pot heads” in a pejorative sense and then run away.
Personally I do not approve of alcohol consumption but I would NEVER suggest a ban (the US tried that in the thirties and failed) nor would I suggest that all who consume alcohol are alcoholics or stupid. I am astounded that there is such vitriol among “smart” people on this subject.
Now… compare the above to this:
If you drink beer, you are fat, lazy and too stupid to fly UAVs and I won’t believe you if you tell me your productive friends drink beer because in my narrow mind beer is the devil’s drink.

I live in the middle of built up area, we have police helicopters flying and hovering around every few weeks, its more than a nuisance having a farm in the house next door isn't fun, they are not too careful about their wiring tricks ...big hot lamps left running 24 7 by passing the meters tapping into the mains for street lighting etc and spraying water from hydroponics systems.......... pus you can sniff a bad one out from the kerb........... and skunk on the wind half a block away.
:) Different plants have different UV and IR signatures and they use hand held sniffers at quite a few ports and airports.
A kestrel hovering isn't looking everywhere for that tiny vole moving in the grass blowing in the breeze ..Vole isn't toilet trained like most small rodents he leaks urine everywhere he goes :o , the Kestrels eye has evolved like a bees to see into the UV spectrum, urine effectively fluorescences...oops.....a Kestrel can see the voles trails through the meadow, it hovers above a good one and waits for movement, then :censored:
Barn owls use sound and off set ears either side of their eyes to hunt even when their eyes cannot see anything the feather facial mask acts as a focusing device.
The sniffers are getting better but they still arnt quite as crafty as natures own little trackers ;) , dogs just happen to be the easiest to train and manage on and of duty. they are now experimenting with medical diagnostic sniffer dogs.
As a kid I told my friends mum he had chicken pox because he smelt like it .......... within a week he was coverd in spots and at the docs. ;) :D

As someone pointed out earlier in this thread, the distinct IR signature of plants make airborne IR sensors make sense but sniffing? As in your example, Clive, ground based sniffing seems to be the better application of science.

I just landed in a small field not far from the A10 (road in UK not a warthog) and had two barn owls flying around me for 10 minutes.
How pleasant.
All the high tech talk, if we look at nature most if not all of the answers will be there!
As for sniffer dogs, I like the long lead skydiving for the blind dogs, lead goes slack certainly time to open reserve.................

I apologize for the pot head terminology. Upon re-reading, I found it to seem offensive and have deleted it. I am a recovering drug addict (18 years) and find it very frustrating to not be able to convince others of how much better, and more productive, their lives would be without drugs. I know mine is!
It would be nice if in return we could get an apology from those who implied all police are dumb. The statement is no less offensive.
I have no problem with the use of marijuana for medical purposes. Most of the discussion here has not been aimed at this use. Legally grown plants would not be targeted by "pot sniffing" aircraft.
I was not aware that President Clinton ever admitted to being a marijuana user.
