Or like Mark Twain once said
I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it.

Good one! :)

You who have been here a while may have noticed how hard I've "tried" over the years to get something "organized" in flying R/C planes in the Huntsville area.

In this time, I've been a member of several clubs and non-clubs. I've tried to participate in several different group flying activities. Thermal soaring, full-contact combat, pylon racing, outdoor flying, indoor flying, etc.

The main thing I've learned thru all this is that guys mostly like to get together and to fly their planes - actually that they mostly like to fly their planes whether they are with anyone else or not.

All that said, I have put on my Airplanes To Do list putting together some sort of flying wing or delta that, when completed, I will put in my van, just in case somebody challenges me to some full-contact combat. I have a preflown Electric Combat Plane that looks like a good sacrifice, er, candidate! Why this one? I have one built (and broken years ago!), and I think I have another ECP kit somewhere deep in my parts closet. Plus this one could be made using Bluecor, which I still have some of.

In the meantime, I recently saw where someone was doing full-combat combat with EasyStars! :D

Excerpt: EasyStar Combat at the NEAT Fair!

If the call of competition is in your blood, and you are willing to put your creative engineering skills as well as your thumbs on the line, then the Multiplex EasyStar Combat Championship is something you might find to be great fun. This contest will be held mid-afternoon on Thursday, September 17 at the official Neat Fair flying site, in the Catskill mountains in lower NY state. The Neat Fair itself is held Friday – Sunday, visit www.neatfair.org for details on this spectacular electric fly-in....

In our March 2009 issue, page 42, we published a full-contact combat contest in which seven pilots campaigned battle-hardened Wingos. Like the Wingo, the EasyStar features a pusher prop behind the wing, a planform the core group of “fighter pilots” who started this event prefer. For a fresh start we chose Multiplex EasyStars for the second annual foray into foamy combat. We invite anyone to participate.

The rules are simple: you must use an EasyStar and can equip it with any electric power system you wish, and you can modify it by adding tape, wire, beefier servos and linkages or even landing gear or a second main wing to create a bipe. However, weapons systems are not allowed—no blades or protrusions that are not considered aircraft structure. Detailed rules can be found at www.neatfair.org and at www.flyrc.com. Unlike in the Wingo contest, paint ball guns will not be participating. Bummer!

Jim, how many strikes do you need before you consider this "OUT" and let it go??? :o

Jim, bring whatever plane you want to combat, even the Infinion is welcome !!

The combat session at SEFF was a blast to watch. I'm sure that is what has sparked the recent interest in combat

I'm taking a staycation this week. Would have gone to Illinois to see my Mom, but that's a long story.

Have started on a scaled-down 13 inch wingspan Mini-Stubby to use Vapor guts for indoor full-contact combat. Using white 3mm CellFoam 88. Trying to keep it as light as possible, but the bare foam at 6 gms weighs more than the removed wing, tail, fuselage, etc. at 4.5 gm. Oh well, it hopefully will be much more sturdy and cheaply replaceable than the Vapor was.

Ran into a suggestion in another thread about what people take to the flying field:
"I did, however, rent a storage unit 1 mile from the field and store my planes there. My wife is much happier and isn't reminded about the air force I have built up."
What a wonderful idea, especially if you got one of the climate-controlled ones. Would even provide an alternate work area if equipped with a table, chair, etc. Only problem I see is 110VAC power. Don't know if that's included or not.

I stripped a lot of useless tape weight from my Foaminator, but have not started refitting it yet. For some reason or another, it had all the gear either broke off or removed for other planes/projects.

I tried tonight to take some of the slop out of the linkages in my Micro-Stubby Delta.

Long story short - Don't even think of gluing the Vapor brick in place in a flat foamy!

Got Uhu Creative glue in the gears of the two servos and a long sad story getting it out and the servos back together and working again. Will figure out a better way to hold the brick securely before I build another one.
