This is not a dumb question.

What type of speedboat?
How big is it.
A model for competitive RC racing?
A model of a pleasure craft?
A model of a racing boat?

A picture would help get you the answers you need.

Hey Boater Guy. Welcome to the forum, the home of 'all the answers'. It would help if you could tell us the make and model of the boat your building and pictures would be the most help. I have several rudder kits for some Dumas 'go fast' boats that may be of interest to you. I'll dig them out and post some pictures this evening. However whether they are right for your boat depends on what boat you have so get with the pictures please. Pete

its about 1 1/2', so not that big, and i'm hooking it up to a 600, it's my first project, so i want it to go fast but not fly, and i'll just be driving it around, no racing

Ok. My stuff was made for a go fast boat so would not be appropriate for what you have. However do not despair as there are many modelers on the forum who have made all kinds of rudder assemblys for their boats so you should still find something you can use. Hang in there for more info from other people. Pete

This is a bit simplistic, but it might help give you an understanding of
the parts you need to create. :)

Probably start by creating a block to put the rudder post through.
Drill a hole that will fit a brass tube, or your rudder post, in the
block, then glue the block to the back of your boat.
