Arrgh! Don't start talking about long gone places. This weekend I learned I'm going to be a Great Great Uncle. Not good when the honorifics begin to double up.

Southtown Theater which has been a Home Depot for close to 20 years. Just looked up the year Star Wars came out since I couldn't remember. 1977 I feel old. I can remember when Tron was cutting edge CGI.

Don't worry. Talk Like a Pirate Day is on September 19th and you all can reminisce on the first time you saw Treasure Island.

I have to admit....... I still have most of my old Star Wars toys in a box in the basement.

Saw it at the Creve Coeur Cine on a HUGE curved screen.

Many years later I worked at that same theater as a projectionist. Even as an adult that screen was still HUGE.

Coronet Theater, San Francisco out on Geary. Magnificent 70mm / Dolby system. Sadly torn down in 2007. Went back and saw The Phantom Menace there when it came out though, brought back a lot of great memories of that summer of 77.

Some of these guys, Vince, were on the crew of the REAL Hispaniola. :D They watch the movie like it's a documentary.

I've never seen Star Wars, though.

WHAT . . . Tell me it isn't so!

One of the best movies ever, no social redeeming plots just a good old good guy gets the bad guy and maybe gets the girl. As a friend at the time said "A good pirate, cowboy, swashbuckling, flying, shoot em up movie. I saw it at the UA Theater in Mission Valley San Diego, also long gone. :)

The movie is also proof that models look better than CGI in almost all cases.

My two cents... 1930ish Fox theater, Fullerton, Ca. (also closed but still standing) in the balcony more into sci-fi than girls at the time. I was 11. Thanks for the memories. D.

Star Wars changed the way children played.

Play acting changed from "Bang Bang!" to, "Piisshoo Pisshoo!"

I've seen clips and the trailer. Somehow spacecraft making a 'swoosh' as they go past w/o any air just seems a bit too unrealistic to me.

A realistic space movie with silence except for on-board mechanics would be neat to see. The clips I saw were like an updated "Lost in Space" (the TV show) as far as authenticity, just with better graphics. And even those look cheesy nowadays.

Why bother, there are better things to do with my time. Like fly, for instance!

But the drives are expelling a propulsive matter.
The impact of that matter on your hull or window would
cause an audible vibration inside your ship.

Andy, Don't over think stuff. It will just make your head hurt. I learned that decades ago. On this thread it might be sacrilegious but my favorite Sci Fi movie is Them with James Whitmore and James Arness.

Also growing up on Ray Harryhausen special effects makes me liberal minded on "cheesy". Being from Wisconsin doesn't hurt either.

AndyThis is why I have always liked Arthur C Clarke. As a kid I read all his science fiction and everything he produced since. All his characters and space ships are bound by real physics.

Back then I was 8 and saw it at the WestView Drive In! Yes, with the speaker hanging in the window of my fathers car. Sitting on a blanket on the hood of the car. Do not try that today!

Cool. Thinking about drive ins makes me nostalgic. The last movie I saw at a drive in was Cahill US Marhsall with John Wayne. My brothers and me backed the pick up into a space set up chaise lounges in the box with a cooler in between. Great way to watch a movie. The 41 Twin Drive in (as in US Highway 41) is long gone too. Two screens back to back.
