Thought I would post a quick reminder of the events in the Pacific NW for the next month.
May 9: tug races on Elliot Bay, Seattle. Best viewing on Pier 66. No model show on this one. Good day to see full size tugs in action and maybe getting a new idea for a prodject.
May 16/17: Anacortes Waterfront Festival, Cap Sante Marina, Anacortes WA. Model boat display hosted by the Skagit R/C Shipmodelers. There will be a static display area for models to be displayed and open water in the harbor for those that want to demonstrate their models. Will also be joined by local model sail boat group in displaying models with racing on Sunday.
May 16/17: Maple Bay model boat show in Maple Bay Canada. see thread in dock talk.
June 6: NW R/C Shipmodelers Regatta at Downtown Park, Bellevue Wa. All boat regatta with sacle navigation and modelers voting in best of show catagories. One of the larger shows in the northwest and is a good time. Note that this has been moved to Saturday from the traditional sunday to allow decompression after the event and a chance for those that need to travel a chance to participate. More info at www.shipmodelers.com
Hope to see you at one or most of these events. :D

The Skagit and NW R/C Shipmodelers had a display at the Waterfront festival in Anacortes, WA this weekend. This is just a static display, but we do have water in the harbor set aside for doing demos for the public. The weather couldn't have been better with temps in the mid 60's-70 with a slight breeze. Although we had fewer scale models this year, we did have more on hand with the local sailing group joining us in displaying/ demos. Most of the models were tugs with a couple of pleasure craft there for variety. Most of the sailboats were of the Soling Class. One of the more interesting models was the Viking ship a local gentalman was building. This model will be r/c, but also used to carry his remains out to sea for a proper Viking memorial that will include burning the model once his life is over.
So here are a few photos that will also include a few full size ships/tugs being worked on at the local shipyard ( just down the street from the festival).

Great report and pictures, Keith! the show looks like a good opportunity for getting the word out to the public about our great hobby! :)

Here are the full size. One being built is for Candies in the Gulf and is a rig support/repair vessel. If you are wondering how big that it really is the tug boat in the photo is the Hunter, a Crowley 8000 tug or more recognizable as an Invader Class at a 136 feet long. This vessel is the second of 3 ( beginnings of the 3rd is infront of the foto) being built.
The other vesel is the retired stern wheeled snag boat "Preston". This vessel is now a museum and registerd landmark and was still in service up until about 1980.

Thanks Aero. Yes it is a great show for this as we get alot attention and admiration by the public that like boats. It was a big benifit having the sheet boats there with their color and the racing they did for several hours on Sunday. That is the reason we like to do this show every year. Also works as a great way to advertise the regatta and Foss Cup events. :D

Great pics. Thanks for the report.
The Crowley being built is probably going to be used to tow between Seattle and Alaska.

Actually the Hunter is just getting the bottom repainted after she won the tug races a week ago. It is used for ship escorting in and around Puget Sound. Last winter it was stationed out at Neah Bay as the emergency response tug for all traffic comming in and out of the sound as.

OK , just a reminder that this weekend is the NW R/C Shipmodelers Regatta in Bellevue. :D This is an all boat regatta that should be a lot of fun with the weather looking to be really good and sunny. I will be there with a couple of my boats and a small Scale Shipyard display of hulls/semi kits. We will see how many others from here attend. :)

Are you working that day?
If not you can come down and fun float in the north end of the pond.
You don't have to compete. ;)
We'd love to see the boats...

transportation is also an issue. my wife needs the van to transport the kid ans all his ammenities ( wheelchair and accesories) i usually use it to transport the boat. my vw bug is on its last legs. transmission is terribly sick and im just about to the point of having to ride my motorcycle to work now. new trans is spendy. been trying to find a good used one. ill have to look at the schedule and see what time it starts and see if i can squeeze in his game and then to the pond.

Keith S--What's a "snag boat"? Pete
Pete,
The snag boat is one that goes around cleaning up all the debry from the waterways ( rivers and Puget Sound) hence any "snags" that might create a disaster. They get a lot of work after the flooding seasons with all the logging debry and trees that end up floating down stream. The lone boat that does most of the work now is the "Puget" ( ww2 style recovery boat) and is berthed down in Seattle at the Corp. of Engineers station located at the Ballard Locks. They have a barge that they unload all the stuff they collect on to.

Thanks to all for a great day - bit of a breeze evened everyone out!
The organizers put on a friendly fun regatta, feed us, provide everyone with plenty of fluids, a raffle draw that had a fantastic range of prizes - hopefully got home, put your feet up with a strong drink - was fun!

Photos I took of the ferry didn't turn out - impressive drive units he's made - each of those units has 8 bolts holding the unit behind the prop together (4 drive units). All made of brass stock on what he defined as a very large lathe and he taught himself as he went. Hopefully he sees these and can add information. Quite the boat.

I got yer photos toes....
Didn't think I could ignore those drives did ya....? :p
I had a hard time with drives.. but had a good time at the event..
SDM seemed to be running too fast after the post fire rebuild.
I think my biggest problem, is running a Voith drive, then twin ASD
drives, then a standard drive one right after the other...
Talk about confusing ....

I just found this thread while searching for my build thread. When I was down for the Regatta last June that was the second time I had ever had the Queen of Chilliwack in the water. She is extremely hard to control at the moment due to the on board computer not running properly yet.
Yes, the lathe I was using was quite big. My dad thinks it was bought in 1962. He is a mechanics teacher at the local High-school, so he taught me the basic of the lathe and let me go. I screwed up my first 5 attempts at the first part and then only one other part had to be remade after that.

I have a couple pictures of the completed units, but they are still yet to be completed. I am not happy with the amount of play they have and need to paint them yet.

If you haven't found it my build log is at http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1087336&highlight=queen+chilliwack
and my website is www.queenofchilliwack.ca
