I am looking at moving to a new radio system  . I currently have a JR 3XRi. It's a nice enough radio but I have never been much of a pistol type lover but prefer the two stick, side by side style.
Now before anyone jumps in with, what i trust will be, informative knowledge and opinion; let me tell you what I already know.

First... I have looked at the Spektrum 2.4G, 5ch. I was informed that they have an issue with the signal being reflected off the water and even though the boat is well within range, it does loose the signal momentarily. Otherwise it's a good sytem. I don't know about the support system behind the product. It's the radio that is currently under a manufacturers recall.

Secondly... Futaba has a similar 2.4G 5 or 6ch two sticker and apparently has addressed the above problem so it won't happen. I have so far heard nothing short of excellent comments on this particular radio, I forget which one it is, and the support system is second to none or so I am hearing.

So there's what I know to this point  but I would like to hear much more since this next radio will be my last one so it better stand up; know what I mean?

Ok folk's, have at it  ! Fill me with the knowledge and information I need to make an "educated decision" and a happy purchase.

I Thank You, one and all.

I think it is a limited number of DX6i's with specific build date codes that are under recall for trim issues, not the DX5e or others...

I sure would like to experience a signal reflection problem with a 2.4G radio in a boat sometime... I keep hearing about them but I've never seen it... I feel left out! :p

I have a Spektrum DX 7 that I use in planes and boats. Never had a problem with 2.4 on water. You can't use it in a sub, but other than that, I have nothing bad to say about it. Horizon Hobby has never let me down either. Don't know if that's the exception or the rule, but I've had good experiences with them also.

I have used a spectrum DX6 for the past year and a half on water with no problems.

I use a Spectrum 5e for Leeds Castle and apart from getting up to speed with the binding and failsafe settings (my problem not the radio's) It has performed faultlessly across water at more than 300 feet.

I consider it the best radio on the market for boats that require 5 channels or less.

I bought a second receiver and bound it to the Tx on my test bed to practise setting the failsafe settings. I turned the new receiver off and powered the one in Leeds Castle on and it worked without rebinding. I'm sold!

Pibber,
I really think it's more personal preference than anything. I've had a Spektrum DX-6 for quite a while. Haven't had any particular problems with it that weren't my fault. I also have Futaba radios (not 2.4 Ghz) that are good ones.
I like the Spektrum because of the receiver's size (tiny), and for the number of channels (I don't use all of them, but just in case, you know?). Why did I get the Spektrum rather than the Futaba? Cuz Futaba didn't have one at the time.
Also, being naturally cheap, I liked the price.
Your choice, knock your self out!

I use a Futaba 6EX without any issues, 1 radio, 3 receivers, 3 boats. Perfect...

The only thing that I don't like on the Spectrum is the antenna, I wish it was removable.

...the antenna, I wish it was removable.

It is removable... but you have to send the radio to back to Horizon if you want to put it back on! :p ;)

The only thing that I don't like on the Spectrum is the antenna, I wish it was removable.

I removed the antenna on my DX6 and mounted it inside the radio housing per a post I saw somewhere on here a long time ago. I made a wood plug for the hole and it looks like a 1/2'' rubber duck antenna now. It reduced my range a little but still works fine as long as no one stands between the radio the the boat. Do a search for DX6 mod.
