CaptMSR here, besides being a builder of nice models, is a captain for McAllister out of Baltimore. He and I are old friends and have worked together on many boats and projects.

So, Friday last (5/1/09) I went out on the job with him. Simple job, pulling a ship off the dock at the container terminal, here's the pics of the day.

Did I mention the nuclear merchant ship N.S. Savannah is moored right next to McAllister's dock?

The Chesapeake Bay Pungy (recronstruction) Lady Maryland came by and did a dance routine with her cargo of school kids.

and the Skipjack Zigsbee (a new boat that replaced the original Zigsbee) skated past the same cargo.

Jerry these are really nice pictures. You can thank your friend at McAllister for taking you out on that trip and now I can say I've seen a tug at work on a large ship. I've never lived near a large ship port and havn't ever seen anything like this. Good pictures too, nice and clear.
I'm impressed with the level of maintenance on the Robert as I know it takes a lot of time and bucks to keep a ship looking that good. Job well done on both counts and my compliments to the captain.
The other pictures of the Lady Maryland and the Zigsbee are good to see too. We always see these boats tied up at the dock but seldom out in the water under full sail.
Good work Todd and thanks for posting these pictures. Gotta check your link now. Pete

I drive over that bridge in the pictures to get home. I tossed the camera in the back and as I got on the bridge I could see the ship turning south to head down the bay. Wish I had kept the camera up front with me.

Zigsbee, Lady Maryland, and some other boats belong to some group that takes school kids out on the water. I was "Living Classrooms" it may be someone else now. Those groups come and go a lot - it's hard to keep track.

It looks cold and blustery, but while it was in the lows 60s, it honestly felt like high 70's because it was very humid. The wind was blowing fairly steady at about 15 knots but died down some when we finally tied on and started to work.

kind of interesting to actually see a tug tying up to a pier, from my experience they usually seem to find an empty end of a pier and just go slow ahead while they wait although that probably saves fuel to tie up. My experience was at Norfolk VA and their four tugs were always insanely busy from dawn till early evenings. As a matter of fact so much so that there were always a civie tug or two around especially if a carrier came in (that takes about 8 of them)
