I am putting together a UAV pilot program for my local Coast Guard unit. I need a lightweight camera that will be positioned looking down from the bottom of the plane. This camera will be operated by a second crewman, and will need to be able to feed live video as well as take still shots... AND have a zoom function. Any suggestions?? Thanks.

URBI
http://www.blip.com.au/item.aspx?itemid=14
The URBI connects to the USB port on the camera and takes input from the R/C receiver in the aircraft. When triggered by the R/C equipment, it will instruct the camera to take photographs and move the zoom in or out (10 positions are possible). Zoom control is only possible with Canon cameras. See compatibility chart.
FULLY Tested with the following
Canon Powershot G5, G6, G7, G9, G10
Canon PowerShot A310, A510, A620, A640
Canon PowerShot S80
Canon PowerShot S2is, S3is, S5is
Canon Digital IXUS 400-S400. Note other IXUS/IXY models do not provide remote control.
Canon SLR 350D, 400D, (USA Rebel) - NOTE no zoom control on SLR as zoom is manual.
Nikon - Almost every recent Nikon, including SLR will support shutter control with this interface.

Iowa / Coast Guard ?????

Mick,
We have Coast Guard at all lakes that are federally run. For instance Lake Texoma at the border of Oklahoma and Texas is a man made lake for water supply, it is controlled by the army core of engineers and the surrounding land is federal/state park land. This is all the way from relatively small lakes all the way up to the Great Lakes up north.

I guess Lake Guard sounds a bit lame

Yeah, I know... Sounds funny, but every state has a t least one USCG unit... They assist in flood emergencies and instruct water-safety courses.

Thanks, Mick... That looks like a useful bit of electronics... I may add one into the budget!

Thanks, Gary... That is really a nice unit. Maybe after we prove the usefulness of a UAV program, this could be incorporated into the next phase.

I didn't see a link that specified any prices? are these available to hobbyists?

I inquired when I was starting to piece together parts for my UAV.
Attached is the pricing sheet for the unit. I think the price is a tad high for the hobbyst, but it is a nice unit. When building a professionally used UAV for SAR or any Public Service actions, I would have one.
