I've noticed lately that a great deal of people feel "entitled" to huge sums of cash and accolades for work that has already been surpassed in the private sector many times over. Show me your example and I'll show you an already existing private application.
Sure you made a small scale UAV which may or may not have some marketable qualities but it in no way guarantees that you will be successful in making money .
If you feel you must whine about it please build a community around it and build your own BBS and go for it. Whining does not accomplish anything but turn folks off to the potentials of the UAV market.
Do something about it, get involved, push forward as nothing in life is guaranteed expect death and taxes.

A post whining about the whiners?
This does not seem like the beginning of a constructive conversation.
The last sentence however, encourages the reader to go out and build a UAV and I have no argument with that! :)

Fly,
Huh?
This is the private sector - no public companies here.

LOL, Must have got up on the wrong side of the bed....... :D
We all have bad days and or feel like bitching about something that we have no control over. The difference is we choose not to write about it in a model airplane forum and get over it rather quickly.
Flyboy you have been a very good contributor to this forum for sometime now, I don’t think this is considered contribution.
Just like you felt to start this tread, other individuals feel the need to vent about what the Govt. has done to them that has stopped them from making some extra $.
I see no difference between this thread and them complaining which puts you on the same level.
Hope your day gets better.
Cheers,
Chris

Edit: Had to come back to this one since I went over and apologized to Chris on the other thread.
One question that concerns me : How does a 501(c)3, non-profit organization
feel "entitled" to wads of money? I just want to be able to fly searches. The scenario Patrick spoke of happened to me personally, if that don't make you feel like someone in the government is playing "god" then you really must like the new tax hike you got there in CA!
So let's talk about you then. Just what have YOU done to further the cause? A new fuel cell? Motor? Safety equipment? How many missing people have you recovered with your UA? How many hours have you spent hashing out proposed guidelines and regs? Anything?
Really.... tell us.
This is ALL about you now.

Yep I'm wrong you guys are right.
Let's all complain together and then the skies will open up and everything will be just dandy then.
I'm done... guess the ignore button would have been better then this thread.

I am getting sick of the whiners whining about the whiners!!!! I am thinking about starting a thread about it.
I think maybe we ought to make a rant Forum anyways as then we can all just go there and vent and not have people make fun of how seriously we all take out toy airplanes!!!!!
My toys are serious dangit!!!!! :D :D
Hopefully you will see that this was meant a good humor, but as usual someone will find a way to take offense. Give it time...

Jon, that's a great idea. I think you should do start that thread. And, remember, there are three kinds of people in this world: those who whine; those who whine about the whiners; and those who laugh at the other two groups. :)

Fly boy,
I think you missed the point.. Gene did vent a bit and he appologized for it. But the point that you missed is that he has been busting his backside to promote all the "good" that can be gained from the use of a UA for many years.. All the meetings with ASTM, SC203, air 160, all the travel expenses and overall logistics its expensive and requires more dedication than most people have.. He has more hours into just the meetings and paperwork that most of the guys here have flying time. I have been there with him for a fair amount of it as well. We have been turned down by the FAA (in their infinant wisdom) to search for kids and pregnant women, We have had to play greif counselor more than once and we have done this out of our own pocket(donations dont exactly fly in the door these days) So, when you start calling someone a whiner that has been through and puts as much effort into doing good stuff, you had better be ready to catch some flack..

Wow!
Reallly! I missed these threads, I knew the state of the industry was bad... Im obviously not involved at all, but reading this really kinda fires me up.
Where can I start. Any government that values a silly law like this over lives needs to re-prioritize!!!
Gene I never really contemplated search and rescue, its so obviously the perfect area for UAV it is not even funny. Imagine 12 FPV R/C Airplanes searching an area vs 2 full sized planes.
So all I got to ask is what can I do hear in Arizona to contribute??? This sucks!

I am in no way saying that SAR is not a noble cause. Unfortunately, the right thing to do and the hard thing to do are always one in the same.
Why don't we start threads which seek to find solutions instead? I have a few already which I'm going to pass by my local sheriff. Lucky for me I have plenty of friends in law enforcement.

So, we're not talking about your contributions then fly_guy? Hmmm......
I think a legitimate vent of a goverment agency using a double standard to obstruct commerce in a growing industry that you've spent your life savings and many years on is a valid gripe. However, mine is one of having tried to work within the system as progressively and positively as possible. We have done some very wonderful things with our planes and continue to promote the positive on a DAILY basis - this is not a hobby for us, it's a full time gig. Is it for you as well? Oh wait.... you aren't answering questions, sorry.
Tuner, how about ONE UAV doing the work of two very expensive full size aircraft? If you have a good viable AP platform, you can work with your local law enforcement by educating them on it's uses, and VOLUNTEER to do it for them. I have been on three searches in your fine state in past year, and we went in a flew in canyons and mountains where the agency really didn't want (or couldn't) bring full size aircraft to bear. I'm on the east coast now working with the GBI on a criminal case now, because they don't really have the budget or capability that we can offer them.
So how do you think I got to the point where I'm flying all over the country supporting law enforcement and other agencies? By WHINING? Uh... no. By consistently producing and being available when they need the technology. How much MORE could this technology be utilized in the proper hands? Geometrically more! We only have 7 recoveries, a few cases closed, and new ones opened because of our product. We KNOW there are hundreds of more that we could assist in but have been warned away from due to the publicity. Almost EVERYONE here know that a small 4lb flying wing staying at 400 feet, with observers, licensed pilot at the controls with 2nd class medical is no threat to GA. Neither is Chris's SparkFun winner, but they get to fly and I don't. Makes sense, huh?

It's difficult, at best, to work/address/be around people who are ill informed and make statements they cannot support. I don't have a problem taking those kind to task. Which is, and will continue to be my contribution to the positive portrayal of UA use in any arena.
I will continue to assist and advise anyone who wishes to use a UA for community service. If nothing else, to gain a wider acceptance of their use.

Whining about whining about whiners: I think it must be the economy and all the political uncertainty, maybe sunspots too. Every online forum I participate in seems to be playing a sour note these days. I might not have nailed exactly why, but it sure seems like there are a lot of stressed and worried people out there and that seems to be creeping into many online discussion forums.

Is there a Full moon out there ...... its a hobby forum some people can make a living by useful spin offs like KD7ost some people are trying out new ideas, others just need guidance &/or education, some people are just curious as to what you do & why we bother.
Constructive criticism is OK, a measure of scepticism is desirable often  ...I'm a Scientist and a teacher, its in the job spec ;) ......... but if you've got nothing positive to say at all then perhaps its better to keep it to yourself.
A couple of years ago I new a bit about Airships, flying-boats and models I know a bit more now, I don't know everything.........part of the fun is finding out and swapping ideas with people who do.
A good teacher also learns from their pupils ... sometimes, someone very often out of necessity or by chance comes up with a new slant on a problem, it may not even work then - but in a future time or place it might be the key to the solution.
Our history shows it, as a Brit I could claim its in the blood ;) :D , lets just see what we can do and do for each other, anthropologists call it differed mutual reciprocation it works, especially if your facing difficulties. :)

IMHO, those that throw out certifications and every acronym under the sun are the ones that have no clue about what they talk about.
Try and find some humbleness because otherwise folks will think you are just full of hot air. Check my post count which is twice that of yours, as well my posts are informative instead of "whining" which you seem to have cornered the market on.
Congrats you made my ignore list.

Should he follow your example of humbleness?
Likewise, post count has never had much of a correlation with knowing what you're talking about. It's not the case in academic publishing, and it's certainly not the case on internet fora.
This thread, which has certainly contributed to your post count, has been completely devoid of anything useful. None of your posts have informed the reader of anything that would benefit them. You just had a bitch about someone. Your quoted paragraph is particularly hypocritical.
Rather feeble. Suggest moving on.

Actually, I am someone that has seen all the B.S. SAR groups have to gone through due to Law enforcement wanting credit for the find. Where I turned was when I as a average joe just helping a family I had never met. I had to help explain to the family why we can not search a area WHERE the body was found about 2 months later. BUT LE had searched that area with a helicopter. Did I mention the body was found 30 feet from the road? With 600 man hours a Heli AND cadaver dogs how could they miss that? This made cause of death hard to determine and too much just does not add up with that case.

Hey P1 GS,
That story is WAY to familiar!!.. Seems as though LE thinks that some dude scanning the ground in a heli is better than High res digi photos that can be studied close up.
We were curssed out by a Sherrif one time because we found a victim in just a few man hours after he had "searched the area with a fine tooth comb" over the previous 4 months. He had a DPS chopper out there and dogs as well.. The vic was found about 900 feet from his own house!!
