View Full Version : Fan balancing

Fan balancing
How can this easily be achieved on a Raptor.
Is there a known method ? I notice there are small pits moulded into the
underside of the fan, are these primarily for the addition of weights ?
There is a fair amount (i would say) of vibration from it. It seems to froth
the fuel, unless it is the air from the exhaust pressure system doing that.
I can certainly feel it when it is above idle and I hold the heli.
Is it from the engine and not the fan ?
My god, what a host of questions Eh !
Thanks.

The only way to effectively balance the fan is with a high point balancer.
You then either add weight, or better still, remove weight from the heavy
side .
Being plastic that is quite easy on the raptor.
The indentations are for governor magnets.
Once you have balanced the fan you really need to bolt it to the engine and
check the run out with a dial guage.
I found this easiest by taking the head off the engine as the fan and crank
would rotate freely and you will get a more acurate reading.
The runout on the fan should be no more than 2 thou
If you dont have access to a high point balancer you can skip that section,
as the runout is a more likely culprit for the fuel foaming

Your problem isn't the fan but your clutch alignment.
You need a dial indicator and align the clutch to a maximum of 0.02 mm
runout.

It isn't because the vibrations are there before the clutch has even started
to engage.

That would have a lesser effect but....
The clutch is mounted to the engine, so it is still spinning at engine rpm
even that the clutchbell is not engaged.
Remember that the clutch is steel and it's mass/weight is far bigger then
that of the plastic fan.
My Raptors clutch was 0.5 mm off center factory mounted, realigning it to
0.02 mm made a significant change.

But the clutch is spinning the moment your starter starts starting, so if
the clutch IS out of alignment, then it'll be something to REALLY check out
of you've got a washing machine instead of a fuel tank.
