Tell me about your UAV part of the hobby?

Hi guys,

I'm looking for another project and just found this forum of RCG. I'm not really sure what a RC UAV is? Of course, it flies itself. But tell me about it, please. How far do you fly them? How do they land? What do you use yours for?

Do you just go to a field, take it off and wait for it to return, or do you follow it?

Seems like this could be fun. I'm considering this or a FPV right now.

I designed and built my own which so far has flown 4 miles by itself. Most are manual takeoff and land but mine is fully autonomous. Theoretically we take it to the field, watch it take off, try to keep up while tracking, than wait for it to land. Things rarely go as planned.

The ultimate goal is 200mi and for that solar power is required. So far only few thousand feet solar powered under RC control.

Generally rules require you to keep in sight and under 400'. Popular low end autopilots do not have enough waypoint memory or the altitude sensor to comply. That is why I had to design one from scratch.
