im currently sailing a Footy class yacht and got to thinking about a back up motor, so i went to the dollar sotre and got a toy motor boat (had what could best be described at a jet drive   ). how can i hook this to the Rx with out useing an esc (i want it to turn off and on by radio)

The easiest way would be a micro switch activated by the sail servo to turn the motor on - giving one speed forward. The switch can be attached to the servo case with servo tape. The pictures are from a horn installation in a 1930 Dodge runabout, but the principle is the same.

i thought of that, but i dont have the spare servo. i figured the singnal wire carried some kind of polarity and i could use that, but no go.

found this electric switch that plugs in unused channel
on another rc universe forum and just received one
-very tiny and light weight
and handles more amps than you would ever use.

Most radios have a slider alongside the stick to "fine tune" the centre off. It can also be used to extend the throw of the servo. If there is a sail servo, a switch can be fitted to operate to the overthrow. This will mean that the sails are either fully in or fully out to operate the motor, but as you only need the motor when the sails are not doing their job, that doesn't matter.
No extra servo, no extra channel, just mount a switch where it will be operated by the servo arm.

what about when the sails are doing their job?

This Hansen Product (http://www.hansenhobbies.com/products/rcelkits/erskit/) appears to work on any unused channel.

Then you do not need auxiliary power ;)

(I personally would use the switch in sails fully open position + trim.)
