Check out microcenter, especially if you have one nearby. There's no way you're going to be able to build one for that price, but they have OEM deals which include OS's for around that price.

I'm afraid that a sub $100 pc will be ancient technology. Probably a Pentium 3, which is 5 generations old.
P3
P4
Core
Core 2 (celeron I posted)
Core i7
edit: let me check, I think I may have something though. An Athlon XP based pc.

well it only has 40gb of hard drive which isn't much, and 512mb isn't going to be fast for opening multiple programs, you pay little and get little

im not overly concerned with that. right now im using a laptop, has 3 some Ghz and 2 gigs of memory, if i need something bad ill use this one. i just dont want to use it as my main computer because its overheats alot, the fan has tons of dust in it cause i used it so long, i tried taking it apart and i was a bit hard.
so i want to have a backup.

You crack me up..you ask what a "dual core is"..yet you say that you found plenty of pc's for under $100 that are not "that old"..!! How would you know?
I say go for one of the "super-duper, sub -$100" pc's off of ebay. That ought to be a "real good" experience..!! You get what you pay for..!
I am wondering how they could even include an OS on a machine (well, that is legal anyway) for that amount..even if it was Win98 it would surprise me..
Oh and by the way..did you ever stop to think "why" your laptop is overheating..? Did it always overheat? Porbably not..so..hmmm...there must be a reason why "now" it overheats, yes? Ever think to get a cooler pad and to clean the thing out..? I work on them all the time and I clean the most amazing amounts of hair and disgusting bits out from the things...
It always amazes me how people just "use" things without ever a thought as to how to keep them in good shape..
Maybe if you did a little cleanup on your laptop, you would not have to buy a junky old sub-$100 desktop..

that computer you linked must not be to bad for the price I guess, there was 28 bids on it lol I guess you could try one, if it ends up being junkie then we all told you so

yes i do have a cooling pad for my laptop.
ive used this laptop for about a year and a half without cleaning.
sorry i dont know alot about computers.
reason i want a cheap computer because im only 16 and i dont get a ton of money, as much as you get in a day at work, id be lucky to get that in a month so i cant buy an expensive computer!

the word cheap doesn't usually mean anything good or decent lol

well, if its cheap, it will work for me, and then if it brakes i wont feel sorry for it.

I strongly recommend saving about $150 to $200 and buying the parts from Newegg. I build tons of computers from newegg and this is what it would cost:
AMD 5200 2.6GHz (Dual Core) $59
4 GB Corsair Ram DDR2 800 $50 ($24 after MIR)
Decent MSI Motherboard $49
Cheap case/PSU combo $49
DVD/CD burner $22
What am I at $200 or so after the one rebate. If you don't even know what dual core is, this above setup would rock your socks for years to come. The stated 512mb ebay computer has less specs than the phone in my pocket right now. :)
Let's try not to flame each other as this whole thread has turned into. For $200 you can build your self a dang nice machine. Anyone I mean ANYONE can put a PC together, its not freaking rocket science.

I knew I was missing something! Ok, 4gb of ram is overkill.. Buy 2Gb for under $20 and get a 500GB hard drive for $59 from the egg. All of those prices include shipping of course. As far as windows goes....Do some research as to what thepiratebay.org is. Just be smart with it :D

Or download a 1 year evaluation copy of Windows 7. (Not gonna run on a $100 computer)

i would go that route, but there is just alot of stuff to do, and i am afraid to mess something up and ruin my 200$ investment.

Watch a youtube video or check out some online tutorials. Throwing a computer together is really really easy.

You can also check out Tiger direct for refurbished computers. Every now and then they get some decent machines with 1-2gig of ram, 100-300g HD, XP or Vista already loaded, DVD RW..........they vary alot. I`ve bought several from them for friends that were cheaper than i could have built them one, and they have a decent warranty. If you sort through em and find one you like, you gotta be ready to hit the buy it button, the good machines dont last long. You dont need a ton of ram for XP, Vista`s a different story, of course more is better. As far as the OS, I`m using Ubuntu 8.1 on one of my machines and i like it. Its alot easier to install software and get things working than previous versions or other versions of Linux. With a good hi speed connection you can download it in 30 min to 1 hr. and its free.

Windows and most newer versions of Linux have native drivers that will usually get things working at least in the basics mode. Yes, you need to install drivers that are motherboard/chipset/hardware specific to get everything functioning to its full potential, but they are not hard to install and can be downloaded from the motherboard or computer mfgs website free. Sometimes the drivers disc will come with the machine. Ram and CPU dont need additional drivers installed.

Geez- don't be suggesting he get a pirated copy of windows... good grief, people.
Take your $100 and go to a computer store with a competent repair staff and have them professionally clean it out and go through it. Then save up another $50 and get an external drive to back up your data.
