I have a general Q on this Dumas Kit, wht do you think of the quality of the wood and plans?
I'm thinking of getting a Dumas CC runabout, but the only Dumas kit I've seen, a small Jon Boat, is v ery poor in wood and plans.
Thanks,
Cruncher

Hi Nick...I'd like to say yes or no, but I really don't understand the item description that you have to trade...I got the Rtr part, but after that, I don't know what you mean. Please explain.
thanks,
Mike

Hi Cruncher...well, I lived in Michigan most of my young life and lived on or near Lake St. Clair (smaller lake between Lake Huron and the Detroit River). Anyway, I built 5 Dumas boat kits...a wood DV 60, DV 40, Star 45 sailboat, Big Swamp Buggy and the real challenge, the Miss Thriftway hydoplane. Back in the day - very early 70's the plywood and Mahogany was all die cut. Depending on the production run, the die cuttting (sharp or dull blades) and wood (good laminations or just crumby wood selection) could vary by a factor of 2...my DV 60 was a pleasure to build and ran like crazy with a then monster OS 80M, the Thriftway a complete nightmare. The Star 45 sailboat (I still have the mast) was an OK build, but the hull ply was 1/8" and nearly impossible to bend over the formers. Swamp buggy wasn't too bad and the DV 40 was OK as well.
I looked through the USS Crockett and the die cutting and wood look pretty good compared to what I can remember. The real problem is today we have been spoiled with laser cut kits and die cutting simply does not afford you the same level of precision assembly. But I would say that the Crockett is a better kit than any of the Dumas kits I built previously and as time went along, Dumas seemed to improve the overall quality of their boat kits from 30 (oops, did I really say 30...really closer to 40 now) years ago. My dad owned a Chris Craft 16' runabout that I remember spending many a spring weekend striping and varnishing...but it was a beautiful boat and Dumas has the same or nearly the same boat in a kit and I've thought more than once to build one.
Hope this helps you in your decision.
Mike

...OK, you've got my attention...I've been looking for a tug to do...I went to Models by Design and read about this model...do you have just the hull or do you have the superstructure mentioned on the website? Question 2, I'll assume that you have experience building ships...are the fittings for 1:24 scale as easy to find as the website suggests?...also, what about a Kortz nozzle that size?
Please advise,
Mike
