Do you use recycled materials for your new boat or just go out and buy new 'everything'.
Many of us are trying to re-use materials as well as save money on these builds...
I've noticed in the last few weeks some on here have been using materials that they have to hand or materials from the scrap box. Andy's Mud Puddle Boat is interesting use of materials found around the house, I've been building small Springers from the scrap box... and i know Arrow5 goes dumpster diving for materials for his boats..
so... How 'green' is your boat?

i work for a recycle company and my springer is 80% recycled material. :D my barge is 90% recycled material. just the floatation was teh only part thats not recycled. just couldnt find a large enough chunck of foam to do the job. so arrow5 is a dumpster diver huh...rookie. im a "profesional" dumpster diver :p :p :p

As i'm not rich at all, and not even close too, a try to use as much materials i allready have as is possible.
At the other hand i'm trying to get better working materials so that i'm able to build my model as realistic as is possible, but as much scratchbuild as i can.

I save almost all of my drop-offs and have them separated, by material type, in bins. I also keep a reasonable amount of new stock on hand. It is so easy just to grab a new sheet of Sintra or plywood. I have to make a real conscious effort to go to the bin first and see if there is a drop-off in there that will work. I, for one, need to be better disciplined to do so.
I guess I am a wannabe green.

Good question. I would like to go as "green" as i can. What would be the "greenest" battery for the motor be?

Can batterys be recycled into new batterys?
I have to admitt that I've bought a lot of new stuff for my boats but that's because I didn't have anything to start off with. However I do save all the scraps and am collecting odd bits and pieces that look like they may be used for scratching small stuff for details. It has to be a very small bit of wood before I chuck it.
Big problem is how to store the scraps so you can see what you have. I'm looking for info on that. Pete

Hi Pete,
I put my scraps in a drawer cupboard, which is actually a bit of a mess, but it's out of side, so my room looks pretty well cleaned up, and within a minute i've found about all the parts i need.
I use my batteries for all my models.
That means i mostly can't sail with 2 models at the same time, but that's no problem.

I use my batterys for several different models too but what to do with old batterys? Can they be recycled? Pete

as for batteries - I think that some automobile battery stores , home
centers/hardware stores might have a battery recycle bin.......
a google search for your area should yield a place to turn in dead batteries .

I go green a s much as possible when there is the oppertunity. Recycle "stuff" that may have a use later on--especially if it was baught at the hobby store. The Wedell is green--well Foss Green. :D

Very green.........sorry I couldn't help myself.
It was rescued from a scratch and dent pile and all the rest of the pieces were pulled from the junk bin.

I have had some success in rescuing good cells from bad cordless drill packs. The trick is working with the unmarked silver cells after you break up a pack. My local big box store let me take a handful for free after I explained that I will be breaking them apart for model boats. Less in the landfill.
