View Full Version : Discussion Looking for a plane for windy conditions

Hello all, just looking for some advice. I have been flying for 3-4 years now, lots of different types of planes. In the last year I have really been focusing on learning to thermal. I currently have an Art Hobby Thermic RES, Photon II DLG, Kennedy Composites Electron & an Ava. As you can tell I really like polyhedrals (very slow, relaxed flying). This past weekend I was out flying & it got relatively windy (15mph). I ended up flying the electron most of the day in that it was electric & just easier to do as opposed to the highstart & fighting the wind.

I left there with a desire for a plane to fill the thermaling-while-windy conditions. And if not a specific plane, what is a good airfoil for windy conditions. My thoughts are these: 2.5 meter (or larger), full house, electric, and airframe under $600. I'd be happy with something along the lines of an Art Hobby Evolution but still really not sure about what airfoil for wind.

Thanks for the help,
Brian

p.s. I will be ballasting up the Ava for more wind (no ballast now) but for other reasons would like this next one to be an electric.

Why don't you ballast the AVA? 10 ozs allows it to fly very well in the 15 mph range. Just make sure you don't shift the CG with the addition of ballast

Hey Ed,

I will be ballasting up the ava, (see my p.s.). Where I use the high start with the Ava, I have to jump in a car & go to a flying site 30 minutes away. I have a park with several soccer fields right across the street from my house. The main reason for the electric is so I just can quickly go to the park & fly it without getting out, setting up & taking down the high start (where I have to use it at the park very easily gets in the way of others).

Thanks,
Brian
