Probably the best thing for you do to to learn how to fly is to grab a simulator. There are lots of them out there, anywhere from free to $300.

FMS is free, but you'll have to buy a controller (probably can find one for $50)

I have RealFlight, which I like

Others on here have AeroFly

http://www.aerofly.de/

Then there's FSOne

http://www.fsone.com/

If you are in Huntsville, run by RC Hobbies on Meridian St. They have FSOne and RealFlight set up in the store so you can try it out.

Jackson County club on Hwy 72 might be an option for you. Certainly closer to you than Huntsville.

Best of luck to you :)

Last time I drove by the field where Jackson RC flew, it appeared that it was now somebody's horse pasture. No sign of flying activity.

How long ago was that?

How long ago was that?

I'm trying to remember, but it has been a while. Probably about a year ago. I could be wrong though.

I'll ask Shorty. He lives down the street from me. He bought the property that club is on. My son Jordan, and his grandson Brandon are big buddys. Seems I remember Jordan mentioning that someone was flying over there a few weeks ago while he and Brandon were on the property.

Andy's right...I've looked the last couple of times when I drive by enroute from Jasper to Huntsville. there's livestock on the field, new fences put up. the shed has been
removed as well. I've been by there twice since Thanksgiving.

I live in scottsboro. They have a youth rodeo there once a month during the summer. It hasen't been a Rc field for a long time. We might be able too meet up sometime...whenever i can get a few things checked off the honey-do list.

what about the football field there at the Scottsboro HS or at North Jackson ?
either place looks great for a SlowStick or other trainer.

There are many paths you can take to learn. Since you specifically asked for someone to help you, an organized club would be one of the most likely places to get access to one-on-one assistance. It would probably at least be worth your while to check out a club or two to see if the club environment is attractive to you - it's not for everyone. Here is a link to the AMA club search.club search (http://www.modelaircraft.org/clubsearch.aspx)
Note that locations and distances from the entered zip code appears to based on the address of the contact person, so the club field may be quite a ways from that address. The club field map will show location of the field.

The Jackson county club did relocate. The AMA map shows a location off Hwy 35, but I've not been there. I know from personal experience that the Dekalb Flyers in Fort Payne would be worth considering. You're also welcome to check out the club I belong to in Arab, if you're up for the somewhat long drive.

toine,

Do you have an airplane already? If not, what do you have in mind?

Your "first plane" should be one whose flight characteristics are tame and pilot workload is low in order to make learning easy. It should be as durable and crash damage resistant as possible. If you fly, you will crash! Everybody does. Not all airplanes are equal in those categories.

It would be hard to find an airplane that better fits all those categories than a Vapor. It practically will fly itself. But, you'd have to have a gym or other indoor arena in which to fly it. It is okay outdoors when it is calm... a condition don't seem to have in north Alabama much anymore. An Aerobird would be another option, but is boring to fly after you learn. Many people have learned on a Slow Stick. They are always fun to fly. RC Hobbies in Huntsville has them all.
