Both, middle-of-the-road.

I'd take a good look at Clearview (http://www.rcflightsim.com/) then. Cost is $40, and you'll need a USB adapter (http://store.rcsupersales.net/servlet/-strse-2656/USB-GWS-SIMULATOR-CORD/Detail). (You'll need the adapter for all the mid and low-end sims, BTW.)
I get 40-80 FPS on both my desktop PC and laptop, and neither have bleeding edge video cards, and both have 2-3 year old CPUs.
The next tier in sims starts at around $150 or so (I believe) and the additional eye candy associated with them will require more horsepower.

Try the demos of RealFlight and Clearview - I could run Realflight on my laptop, but Clearview was choppy. FMS runs good on all my computers. Just try the demos because you may find what I did - I expected Clearview would run better, but for some reason it doesn't.

Heli-X is a good free one, I use HeliSimRC as well. Works great on cheap hardware, costs nothing, and has some great training modes. http://www.marksfiles.net/HeliSimRC/index.htm
